  4.  @Ancient_Chronicler  Estonians can understand Finnish mostly because Finnish TV is viewable in major cities like Tallinn and Tartu and for a certain generation it was the only foreign language apart from Russian they could learn. However the languages have many homonyms (words that sound the same but mean different) that will confound and confuse each other, an Estonian and Finn will probably speak English when they meet these days. The people on Aaland (an Island belonging to Finland) certainly cannot understand Estonians- they speak Swedish!

  7. The Mordvin languages are not Slavic languages so they bear little resemblance to Russian apart from letters used. They are Uralic peoples, after all

  8.  Kyril J  the term is Uralic, and there are many diverse branches of the language that have been separated by distance and time- and unlike the Slavic languages have had few linkages via religion, physical contact and political union. Finno-Uralic (Finland and Estonia) is the strongest branch along with Ugric (Hungarian) today
