Italians, Greek, Polish, Midlands and Spanish grandmas would speak like this as well. What we think of as " Western" is normally Anglo-Saxon/ American bland, culture-void crap.

a lot of his travels are inane walks or getting shouted at by locals
17
the republics in the Caucasus are not exactly "Russia" proper as they have high levels of autonomy and often it seems you are not in Russia any more despite the opposite
11
and you have to film the old London black cabs they bought up to use in Baku.

he travels really light.
2
nowadays the border moved a bit west, didnt it
2
he has already been there.
1
well he won't be able to cross directly into Armenia (the border is closed and there are no flights) so a detour to Georgia might be necessary. Even then, if the authorities see an Azerbaijan visa in his passport he might get dunked into the Med.
1
@JesusisJesus Azerbaijan is actually at low altitude near the Caspian so the leaves will actually cause trouble
1
Dagestan is majority Muslim and some of the TV stations occasionally play Middle Eastern music or Turkish music. Azerbaijan is also mainly Muslim and culturally Turkish as well.

Bald knows that when the guy says Russia he means the non-Caucasus bits and more traditionally European part of Russia. A lot of those republics are only Russian by geography, Slavic Russian culture is almost absent in many places-no Orthodox churches, prevalence of Muslim religion, local languages, autonomous local government and societal structure.

Azerbaijan hated being a Soviet republic like Georgia did so they started de-Soviet-ing as soon as they could. When they discovered oil and gas in the Caspian they went even further away from Soviet/Russian influence and decided to embrace ties with Turkey and Iran (and Israel) instead as well as Western Europe. More Azeris live in Iran compared to Azerbaijan.

risking definite arrest?

he had not left Russia at the time. that is the Mahatchakala train station

1
so are Kazakhstan and Israel. Might as well invite Australia at this rate
1
it's the sermon rather than a ceremony
1
yes they are but he might need a visa first. no VOA I think
1
he meant the classical "Slavic" Russia . In Dagestan the culture is not Slavic so despite being a Russian republic it isn't "Russian" to a lot of people as the culture is virtually foreign (and the laws). Bald has been to several parts of the country are not culturally Russian like Chechnya, Tuvan and Kamatchaka which are all within Russia's borders but are culturally so foreign even Russians feel they are outside their country.

he is
1
how do you get into Azerbaijan without a confirmed hotel booking?
1

1
he married a Belarussian woman once and just soaked it up. He reportedly misses the case system entirely but people understand him anyway. The history of his Russian journey is explained in a video on his channel as well as his collab with NFKRZ on that channel
1
