Kazakhstan is ALREADY rich with gold and oil and are building a lot of nice stuff with the money. you'd be surprised. it's well ahead of the other stans. turkmenistan is considered the north korea of the area. according to an older copy of lonely planet, people often get followed by government agents and they would stamp your passport for entry AND leaving EACH CITY. but you could never know what cities required a stamp and what didn't. so they'd send you back where you just come from to get an exit stamp or a stamp for a city you missed enroute to your current city. I don't know if they've changed in the last 5 years since that was qritten.
