My grandfather was in ww2, kinda famous battalion on the pacific theatre. See books on his battalion, saw one being sold in the post office last week. He had a lot of daughters and would say "they've always gotta put on their war paint before they go out".

I will just say, in the US what constitutes "seeing combat" and things like the "military veteran injured on active duty" which means he was on a training exercise in west texas and the tank went in a hole, hurting his back for 80% disability pension while he now dig holes and chops firewood with an axe on social media while everyone is kissing his butt with thank you for your (never left the country once) service.... i knew that guy for years and you'd be laughed out of existence in Australia. People tell me average infantry or engineers or whoever here is always in armoured vehicles and sees very little like you've mentioned.

@LongShadong i hrard stories about chechnya, nobody knew were the CO was or even who he was, soldiers mixed with kontraktniki (mercenaries) who were more interested in killing everyone and everything than objectives, soldiers wearing joggers not boots, just utter cluelessness and disorganisation.

Some will shake your hand but not be able to look you in the face. They were on the side of the British in WW2 and the burmese ONLY swapped from supporting the Japanese 2 weeks before he Japanese lost. SUDDENLY when the writing was on the wall, the burmese swapped to the British side, and the British left them in charge for them to turn on the karens and other minorities like 3 MONTHS after the British left. The karen where told to destroy all their weapons at the end of the war by the British but they hid them all in caves and when the burmese turned on them, they were ready

@codygranrud6212 the fighters always stay at the outer edges to make sure they get any incoming forces before they get to the villages. But sometimes they still do. They have heaps of Karen in UN refugee camps and there's a highway near the border. The military will fire beltfeds INTO the camp at night and the thai military guarding it will not engage them because they don't want to start a conflict between Thailand and the burmese military. This would happen every couple of months and they would wake up to bury the dead the next day. In the refugee camp they can't have guns and are essentially sitting ducks. They are in bamboo shacks that offer little or no protection against the beltfeds.

I know a lot about the Karen side and my parents know many who survived it, some with shrapnel scars. They set up small settlements in the jungle, iften to have the military raid them late at night. They would make sure they always left with their seed stash if they had to escape, and many lived for YEARS of just bamboo shoots and bananas.

So they've been fighting almost continuously since WW2. Many Karen have been on the run for years living solely on bamboo shoots and bananas, the burmese raid the villages at night and bomb them. Many have gone to UN refugee camps in Thailand that ONLY provide them with chilli paste, salt, rice, and fish paste, NOTHING MORE. They have a hospital there, they get married and have kids in these camps, every 2 months the burmese drive up a highway beside the camps and fire a beltfed in. Thai soldiers guard the camps but do nothing because they don't want Thailand to have a war with burma. So they're SITTING DUCKS, unable to fight back because no guns allowed in the refugee camps. They get up next morning and bury the dead. The NEW rebels have little idea but are being ADVISED by the Karen militia and another muslim militia that's existed for years. The karen and Muslims are WELL trained. The karen have AKs and radios but that's about it. The karen are offended by the burmese language even though they're all fluent in it, because it's "the language of the enemy" and I doubt will ever fully trust the burmese and likely won't give them any arms. SOME karen have thai citizenship but Thailand isn't willing to make them all citizens. They are in certain northern areas living in the country because the thai king gifted them a bunch of land in horrendously wet and steep territory up on the thai north west. So many of them have family who have died, husbands killed and shrapnel scars. The new rebels are playing around with drones that can carry and drop mortar shells, and they've also got these cardboard model plane drones that are like a 1 shot disposable thing, I believe Ukraine has a more advanced version of the same thing. The karen have a limit on the amount that can come over so wait years to try to bring their spouses over with legitimate normal migration and then the guys are blocked from working for 6 months. Meanwhile we have had people who aren't legitimate refugees coming from other countries in previous years. There's quite a number of minority groups, ALL persecuted. Karen who could get jobs in burma working for burmese would work being initially paid, then often work for MONTHS without pay on the promise of being paid at harvest to get nothing. Or be paid to be robbed 5 minutes later. Local burmese REALLY burnt themselves with Karen and this might well pose a problem in future. They HOPE it will be better in future but many are doubtful

@jim99west46 i don't know about emeralds, probably, but they certainly have rubies. And they're considered the best in the world. If you've seen them, you'd understand why, they're the most beautiful red you'll ever see in a ruby.

We have PLENTY of these people here in Australia (Karen =car-wren. I have worked with some and my parents know many. Was interested in a short pretty girl but she couldn't focus on one thing, trying to do too much at once. Would've been like trying to date a chihuahua.

Didn't know we had anyone there. We got PILES of refugees from there though, ones that have lived in UN refugee camps for the last 30 years, including kids that have never lived outside of the camps
