  1. The maintenance costs OR the property taxes were SO HIGH versus the incoming rent, the landlords GAVE UP. This is what happens when you get rent control but the government STILL hikes the property taxes. There ARE times when a building is too far gone to warrant repairs. Chinese buildings are like that 5 YEARS from new. I am in a cottage built in the 1850s and it's really not great. Anyway imagine getting 170 years out if a wooden building!!! I'm doing what I can but the foundations were NEVER right from when it was moved here in like 1895 and add to that the wood rot and it'll never last past another 15 years.

  2. We were FINE here in Australia. ONE CITY got bombed, and it had no industry to begin with.

  6.  @aceathor  American ALWAYS ALWAYS has a surplus of buildings. You know all those HUGE houses in Detroit, and STREETS of houses empty? There were people BUILDING NEW houses side by side in 2007 in Detroit. Completely serious. I have seen places in texas only WEEKS off bring finished and everything done like kerbs but no bitumen on the road. I even saw a video on a NEW hotel just ABANDONED in Texas. It would have been 10 guys and 3-5 days to have it completed. Bottom 3 floors just needed painting. They were already fully carpeted.
