  1. I live in Utah. Salt Lake City born & raised. I would like for a moment to touch upon the culture here and how intrinsically twined it is to these women's thinking. The LDS faith, or mormonism, is wrought with much of the extremist thinking that plagued these families. Nothing about this case, is unfortunately surprising to me. It is very common for women to feel immense pressure to marry and procreate, as they are deeply indoctrinated to do so, as early and as much as they can. The competitive narcissism is very prevalent as well, it is extremely holier than thou. The shame, the repression, the homophobia, the racism, the purity culture, it's all born out of mormonism. It is also very common for people to take their many children out of public school to further indoctrinate them. The nepotism is also not surprising- the way Jody got a continuous stream of clients from her church is how business is done here. It extremely toxic, cultish thinking, and they are products of their environment (though still wholly responsible and culbable). My point and hope is to shine a light on the dogma that allows this kind of 'distortion' (to quote Jody) to fester, for it has damaged and traumatized countless.
