  1. These laws are born of a need to curtail predatory and exploitive practices. Most polygamist and bigamous marriages, historically, are exploitive to women, sometimes groomed since childhood within religious orgazitions and cults that promote a 'harem' like culture where the multiple wives (rarely are women married to multiple men) are subservient to one man. Its a measure to ensure marital equality.
