I think it could have been done to get Ukrainian forces away from the Belarus border. Macron even wanted to position 20,000 French soldiers there and free Ukrainians to go to the front (though it sounds now that also French and Poles are in Kursk, so tin that case Macron lied about NATO soldiers staying in the back). Kursk is closer by than the eastern front for them so Russia may have created a weak spot there and made an invitation to go to Moscow or possibility destroy some airfields etc, though they removed planes as it seems. Also if the Ukrainian forces are eliminated from the north then the road to Kiev is basically open for Russia.

@indybruining The SMO goals are clearly defined. It's about denazification and demilitarization, 2 clear goals. The only territory of interest for Russia is the Donbas with ethnic Russians living there and which territory + civilians had been shelled by Kiev from 2014 on. Ukrainian troops are in territory of the RF (Donbas + Russia of before 2014), so they are the attackers of Russian territory.

Well it can be a lot at some point on all those spots together. In the very beginning was said only 300 men of which 150 were eliminated, but at the same day already that was corrected to 3000. And 200 vehicles destroyed within 2 days or so. There can be a lack of organization though, hard to tell atm.

@SgtOg But what Russia took in 8 months Ukraine lost then of course, so that reasoning is off. It's not about territory btw. The goals of the SMO were denazification and demilitarization, nothing about territory.
