  1. Toyota knew the previous Land Cruiser was a stealth rich person's vehicle, so they made sure the new one still appealed to those people as a daily. Then they created an artificial distinction between the GS/Land Cruiser and the essentially identical 4Runner to justify the price gulf. It's the same reason you can't get a Camry with nicer upholstery on the dash and doors than terry dishtowels, because that's Lexus territory.
