  1. That's not a problem with the technology though, that's just shitty product design. We have a Toyota RAV4 and every single time you get in the vehicle, you have to push the little button to enable the cruise control. Every single time. It resets itself to Disabled every time you get in and start the thing. It's a little button on the end of the cruise control lever. You have to remember to push it EVERY time you get in the blasted car! On my old RX-7 Turbo II the cruise enable button only had to be pushed once, it stayed permanently enabled until you pushed it again no matter how many times you drove it.

  2.  @Tol_Ga  Ok, the Honda cars (and our two Mazda) I've been in had a toggle switch for cruise control. You turned it on and that was it--it was always enabled until you deliberately turned it off again. Not Toyotas! The dang cruise enable switch resets itself every time you turn the ignition off. It doesn't do jack the next time you drive unless you remember to deliberately turn it on again with the little button on the end. The cruise control system itself works great, nothing wrong with it, but what a pain in the ass!

  3. Tape decks are a pain in the ass in cars. Ever had one eat a tape? Whole f@cking dashboard has to come apart. Dismantle tape deck and clear tape. Test tape deck. Reinstall, including re-assembly of entire f@cking dashboard. When you're finally done, one of the speakers doesn't work :) Only reason I kept the tape deck in my car for so long is because it was a sports car (RX-7) with a stiff suspension, and CD players tend to skip when you hit bumps!

  4. At one time a car was a car. They all had pretty much the same control layout. Nowadays if you want a manual (lever) parking brake you probably have to look for a sports car. Same thing with manual transmissions. Strangely enough though, our 2015 RAV4 has the old school parking brake lever. No idea about the newest ones.

  5.  @WheelsAndHelmets  Yes, that's the major reason I prefer the lever myself--it isn't only on or off, you can vary it. Parking brakes also used to be called the "emergency brake", but with an on-off button you cannot vary the braking force which makes the parking brake useless for stopping if the main service brakes fail. Of course, car brakes have been so reliable for maybe 50ish years that it makes little difference nowadays.

  6. The turbo is NOT spooled up when the car is stopped and the start-stop system shuts the engine off. Oil does not boil in turbos, cooling water does that but not oil. Whenever the start-stop system does its thing, the turbo is not being used because the throttle is closed or nearly closed.

  7.  @The_Noticer.  Turbos are also too expensive for economy cars :) Heat isn't the problem, the turbo is designed to cope with it. Also, the stop-start system doesn't shut the engine off when decelerating the car, it does it after the car has already STOPPED. A turbo car with stop-start would just have a few seconds of time delay before shutting off the engine, that's all.

  8.  @The_Noticer.  You can do that if you wish, idling the engine for maybe 10 seconds is probably fine for a street driven car. You aren't exactly going 100 MPH when you roll down your street and park the car in the driveway.

  10. BEST modern feature: Today's cars are just a hell of a lot better than anything built before them. Better handling and acceleration, better brakes, steering and suspension, last longer without rusting out, require fewer repairs, and are relatively maintenance-free for the most part outside of oil changes, tires and brakes. WORST modern feature: They're all too damned expensive, and on the rare case of a major problem (such as transmission failure) the repairs cost a FORTUNE. 30 years ago a used transmission from a popular vehicle bought from a wrecker with 150,000 miles on it might have been 100 bucks. Today, the same old used transmission is $5,000 or more and it's the same thing: It might last a whole year or even two, or it might fail again in 3 days. Cars and spare parts today are insanely expensive, but today's new cars are MUCH better.

  11. Backup cameras are one of the best superfluous inventions ever put into passenger cars. Not needed, but mighty nice. I wouldn't want to pay extra for one, but for larger vehicles and/or ones with shitty rear views it's tough to beat the back-up cam especially if you want to reverse into a parking spot. Our RAV4 has one, they're a handy feature.

Teslas are cool, but for that amount of money I want a car with real controls, I want it for driving and not porking around with a touch screen in the middle of winter when my hands are frozen and covered in snow. It's a car, not a stupid gaming PC and I'm not really sure why Tesla builds them like that. I don't want to take my eyes off the road for 5 minutes to pork around with menus and options on a touch screen just to turn shit on and off in the car or change the tunes and adjust the A/C. Buttons and levers are JUST F@CKING FINE, thank you very much.
