  4.  @soulshine8281  I'm 45 years old now. Fuck friends. I still like music though :) Nothing against friendship. If real friends existed at my age, I wouldn't have very many anyway. I have zero interest in who works harder, who just had a kid, what job somebody has, who work more hours, who brags about how many bills they have to pay, and who's 2-year-old kid is going to Harvard or Yale (or both) one day because he/she is 2 years old and can already spell their own name. Popularity is great when you're young and love skateboarding or street fighting and think you're cool. Dire Straits are even more great when you're far too old to worry about measuring your life in terms of popularity :) Nothing wrong with people who can't stand Dire Straits. I would never choose or deny a friendship based on whether or not they like the same music as me--pretty much the same thing as when I was 14 or 15 years old. Music is personal for me, it's not a fashion statement to me, so I could never base a friendship (or form an external identity) on it at my age any more than I could when I was 15 :)

  7. Top 10 hits have to have as much appeal to as many people as possible. That means they're going to be sonically and melodically very predictable and, dare I say it, mundane. They don't really sound inspired to me, but they appeal to huge numbers of people. That's why they're big hits. They're stylish, but they are not MOVING songs. Simple and rather predictable songs don't have to suck. There's a lot of great stuff out there that's maybe 3 or 4 power chords and a rhythm section, all of them written in 4/4 time. It's called pop-punk, and some of it really kicks ass :) But, the sound doesn't appeal to the marginally-interested masses who mostly see music as a decoration rather that something to focus on.

  9. Despite being huge, rap has always suffered from mediocrity in its lyrics. You can only write so many "original" songs with lyrics that are little more than bragging about being a degenerate :) Ok guy, you like to start fights, you like "bling" and you enjoy being a rapist and/or a street gangster. We get the point. I'll be the first to admit that while rap isn't my #1 choice, there has been good rap out there. It's the culture that revolves around it that makes rap so limited, everything always seems to be bragging about being angry and belligerent while trying to be stylish. It wears thin fast. If you want classic rock that you can love even when you're "old", try listening to Dire Straits!

Music changes over time, it's supposed to do that because it's a reflection of the minds of the times. Green Day's new album called Saviors doesn't sound like Black Flag because it isn't supposed to, it's a third of a century newer.

Don't forget that lots of popular music, or 'chart music' as you described it, is specifically written and performed a certain way--it's a deliberate attempt at commercial success in the short-term. They aren't trying to write any songs that are moving, relatable, or even all that good--in other words, they're written for a widely-consumable style, not to be moving or relatable art, and not to have any kind of long-term staying power. The simple fact is that's it's easier to sell a Miley Cyrus tune than it is to sell a Rush song or a Tool song. Actually, one of the really surprising success stories in the world of music is, for me at least, the British band Dire Straits. I'm surprised anyone in North America listened to them at all, never mind how huge they were when I was a kid.

  14. For such a wonderful art form, probably one of the best things the human species invented, music as a way of life is just so fucking sad. It's a shame the music industry is just so psychopathic and has no regard for the humanity behind the "next big hit" or what the fuck ever. On the other hand, it's worthwhile keeping in mind that the music industry is NOT about music and never has been, it's about the industry: Profits. Once you understand that, it makes it all the more remarkable that any music has ever been recorded and released at all, just because of how it all works the odds of any given artist being successful is so close to zero it's amazing that anybody ever tries at all.

  17. Times have changed. Instead of wanting to be a top guitarist, young people want to grow up to have top social media presence. Instead of a smash hit album, they dream of having X number of views and/or likes by the time they're 35. Fair enough. Bob Dylan himself had a thing to say about "The Times".

Look what happens to most people when they have to agonize over Shakespeare in school, there's nothing wrong with Shakespeare but nobody ever wants to hear about him ever again as long as they live!   23. Rick, you're showing your age. Video games are for Gen X! Gen Z and newer aren't hung up on video games. They're into social media. It isn't about what music rocks, it isn't about what video games kick ass. It's about the NUMBER OF LIKES. Social media allows people to delude themselves into thinking they're more 'socially desirable' (popular) than they really are. Music and video games CANNOT compete with the feeling of being IMPORTANT. Psychologists call it epidemic narcissism. Bob Dylan simply said "The times, they are a-changin'." Both are right. Music simply cannot compete with social media presence because of the time and effort it takes to get good, whereas social media depends only on your appearance and how much money your parents are willing to spend on your clothes and other consumer products. Why bother with the time and effort to develop a talent when you can climb the ladder much, MUCH faster with almost zero effort as long as you look a certain way and wear the right crap?

  25. Mine too, I grew up playing instruments and writing songs profusely, I loved doing it. I only stopped writing when I was tortured by the fucking police back when I was 11 years old in 1988. Been the walking dead ever since. Making music is one of this stupid species' only redeeming qualities.

  28. Why Musicians Are Broke and How to Fix It: They're broke because they have no money. To fix it, make some money. Try serving an apprenticeship as a plumber and get a trade qualification. Plumbing will NOT make you unfathomably rich and famous. But if you put anywhere near as much time & effort into plumbing as you do into playing an instrument decently, what you WILL probably do is clear six figures!! Aside from that, learn to enjoy being broke and live for your art instead of keeping up with the Joneses.
