"ATGATT and no alcohol" Bah, you're no fun :) Those two things are a good plan, but many riders consider them 'weak' because they're for people who "can't handle it."

More like 99.99% of motorcyclists and maybe 5% of car drivers.

The reason why that is, is that it's the same battery pack and fast-charging causes more battery failures sooner. So, you have to pay extra to enable fast charging because it covers the greater likelihood of pack failures during the warranty period. Faster charging = shorter pack life. Capische?

@Bordpie Slow charging isn't a problem if the battery capacity is large enough though (long range.) After hours and hours of riding, you just wait for it to charge at the normal rate while you look for some coarse sandpaper to remove the calluses from your ass cheeks, and when you're done you're ready to ride again :)

@siraff4461 Yes, you got it. So, they charge more for a feature that will make the exact same bike more desirable but less durable. Battery tech isn't all that great yet. Complaining about things like this is just like paying top dollar for an exotic car and then complaining it burns too much gas. See what I mean?

@palbi The extra cost for fast charging? That's to cover all the extra warranty claims because faster charging will shorten the battery pack life on average (some packs will make it, but more will fail before the warranty is up and more will fail early on in the warranty, so you're more likely to need two replacements under warranty.) Before you say things like "Why don't they just use better battery tech!" well, then YOU go ahead and invent it! They are NOT doing it to screw you. I've just explained why it's done that way. Keep arguing if you wish.

@palbi I apologize if I wasn't making myself understood. You're not unlocking existing tech, you're enabling faster charging which is more likely to cause early pack failure. So if you want faster charging, you either pay more money or settle for a much shorter warranty period, or possibly a combination of the two. Alternatively, they could do it by enabling faster charging at the customer's request without charging more money, but the battery pack warranty is null and void. Much like buying a car with a warranty, if the car has a turbocharged engine and you modify the wastegate control system to crank up the turbo boost and produce more power, your engine's warranty is null and void even if it still runs just fine and produces a lot more power. You can't blow your engine due to deliberately increasing the turbo boost and make a warranty claim because that would be fraudulent, the engine is guaranteed only at the factory-set turbo boost and only while running on the recommended grade of fuel. Same thing with increasing the charging rate on an EV pack.

@beerenmusli8220 I know, I'd say it's a small single-digit percentage. Just look at the overwhelming number of front wheel drive vehicles. They're well-designed and made today and they have lots of horsepower, but they are NOT driver's cars. They are not for enthusiasts, even though they're basically good cars for going to work and even road trips because they handle well and have pretty decent steering feel.

Any comments about riding sober? I haven't done any riding in years but a common thing with especially young guys is the whole "I CAN HANDLE IT!" bullshit game. No, you CAN'T handle it bonehead! Ride sober!

They didn't fail, they're very good now. They're just insanely expensive.
