  1. I'm not sure if people are depressed because of using social media. But, younger people who's lives are empty will find social media overwhelmingly addictive because it creates the illusion that other people are interested in you--usually for very superficial image-related reasons. So, you end up focusing on the purely superficial, still living an empty life with no goals or enthusiasm, and end up very depressed. I'm an old guy (almost 45) and we didn't need social media to make us miserable. That's what schoolwork was for.
