  2. Passenger jets must have more than one engine for safety. They sometimes do fail, but not very often. When it happens it's unsettling for the passengers but for the plane itself it's almost always so uneventful as to be pretty much trivial. They pick a convenient airport and land the plane. Because of the enormous number of flight hours every year, passenger jet engines fail from time to time, and for the most part it's no big deal.
