And the little bits that come off the belt will block the oil strainer, causing the otherwise perfectly good engine to destroy itself from oil starvation. Whoever designed that sort of thing must really like taking it up the ass a lot. No lube either, kids.

The guy revved the piss out of it. What else do you think caused it?

A 1.0L turbo 3-lunger for compact cars sounds like a really cool idea, but whoever decided to use a sealed timing belt system should be shot in the ass with rock salt. Drive for 100,000 km or so, then throw it all away and replace the whole engine, because replacing the belt costs more! That just sucks and is uber-lameass. Why didn't they just use a fucking timing chain like they always did on actual car engines? They work fine.

If it's sealed and cannot be replaced without removing and dismantling the whole engine, only chain drives are acceptable. Belts are fine for the cheapest of the cheap, the little cars that are basically disposable and cost $3,500 brand new--none of which exist in North America. For everything else, either a chain drive or easily-replaceable timing belt at the bare bones minimum. Whoever designed this engine was a pretty creative thinker but obviously NEVER owned or drove a car!

I haven't done the car thang in many years, but as a general rule if any part of an engine casting (crankcase or anything else) is damaged in a crash, the whole engine is SCRAP.
