These are excellent points, but arguably, both brake lights and turn signals are redundant because of how driving is intended to be done. Brake lights are there because people follow too closely, they aren't necessary. You're supposed to watch what's going on!
Turn signals have a definite purpose, mostly so the driver behind you knows you want to turn, and that's why he's slowing down in front of you with no stop sign or red light ahead. They're a courtesy feature so people don't have a cow behind the wheel. As for lane changes, you aren't supposed to do that at all until there's plenty of room, so you don't catch anyone off guard or cut anyone off.
But, they're there for safety and courtesy reasons. Neither are actually necessary if you think about it. That being said... Make sure the damn things work, and always, ALWAYS use them when you're supposed to, because it does, in fact, reduce BS and mishaps :)
