The problem is there isn't a perceived correlation between expenditure of effort and benefiting from it, so people become depressed until you're screwed whether you work hard or not. After that, people hang on for a few years, then they quit and go on welfare.

  6. Always overestimate your attacker. Reasonable force in self-defense is absolute MAXIMUM possible force that you can muster unless there's a clear risk to innocent bystanders--but keep in mind that that's what your attacker is banking on. Yeah, the law doesn't like it. They don't like much of anything, though.
