Until radiation sickness became apparent, even the bigger of the bombs actually caused less dramatic damage than the fire-bombing of Tokyo...Japan didn't surrender til Stalin said he wouldn't invade Japan unless the U.S. did also -- a Colonel (equiv) in the WW2 Japanese Army once told me Japan was ready to fight a U.S. invasion, because even if Japan lost the Americans would eventually leave. But if the Red Army invaded too, besides 2 fronts, the Russians would never leave Japan. Who knows?!
