@BigDaddyCane777 I don't think you understand how dangerous weaponizing the US dollar is in the long term.

Few people here at home understand what happens to our standard of living if the US dollar is no longer the world's currency reserve.

@zomgneedaname I think they understand the United States is in no position to invade them right now. Not that it would be a military problem as Saudi Arabia for all there weapons system is essentially a sitting duck. I'm thinking the international political environment is not ripe for an invasion of a nation right now not to mention the fact it would be extremely difficult to get public support for a war like this considering how the last one turned out. The Saudis doing this does shock me. The Saudis have relied on protection from the United States for a very long time. Are they banking on Chinese influence over the Iranians being enough to stop Iran from being aggressive? Are they hoping they can give Turkey enough financial incentives to protect them from Iran? Or is all this simply a bluff to get something from the Biden administration. Confusing stuff.

@xtr3me_hx832 The reality is the Muslims around the world hate Saudi Arabia and will probably cheer it's destruction. America won't be invading Saudi Arabia for other reasons.

If the dollar collapses the entire world economy will be put into a tailspin, even nations which don't have as much exposure to it. Eventually world markets will get used to the new reality and the show will go on, the difference being we Americans being a lot poorer than we used to be.
3
@pineapplesareyummy6352 We can add Bill Clinton and George Bush to that list as well. If you weaponize your currency enough times and for long enough, people will simply stop using it
2
@Thomas Fredrick, when the show is over we'll remember how good we had it and squandered it with insanity. If you're lucky enough to have your currency be the world's reserve currency, the last thing you should be doing is weaponizing it for short term political leverage on nations. It's insanity. Let everyone continue happily using the dollar. Weaponizing it should literally be off the table in any circumstance.

@zomgneedaname The middle class is vanishing, crime is so bad in cities that anyone with money is leaving, our educational system is crumbling, people who can afford it are going overseas for healthcare. But yea I need to be more worried about the fact Putin is a bad man. Distraction? You're spot on.

@arabian_desert If only you guys didn't have one of the most evil regimes on the planet, you'd have more people cheering you on.

@lamarravery4094 Pushing nations to get off the dollar slowly started to gain steam under sanction happy Bill Clinton. Bush came in and stepped it up, Obama came in and took it even farther. Trump and now Biden are following the tradition. You can only weaponize your currency for so long.
1
@Don Juan, I'm no fan of joe. In fact I'm a "Lets go Brandon" kinda guy. With that said I'm not sure I'd put this situation squarely on Joe's feet. We've been weaponizing the dollar since the days of Bill Clinton. I said it a few times already but again you can only weaponize your currency for so long until the world simply stops using it.

@3b0d1999 To be fair China is like that now. What happens when they're the sole top superpower? The Chinese like everyone else on this planet are human and will probably react the same way every other civilization has when it attains a certain level of power. Humans will be humans, power corrupts us and absolute power corrupts us absolutely. I'd imagine the Chinese aren't immune to this.

@lamarravery4094 This issue isn't about us being energy independent or needing Saudi oil. It's about the Saudis trading their oil in anything besides dollars. It sets a dangerous precedent which if copied worldwide will impoverish Americans overnight. We print money like it's going out of style. Any other nation which does that ends up like Venezuela. The reason we don't get that type of hyper inflation is due to the demand for the dollar worldwide. If that demand dries up, we're Venezuela. Being energy independent is great but it won't solve the problem I just explained.
1
@lamarravery4094 I think we're too deep in to go back to a gold standard. I'm not sure there is enough gold on earth to back up the amount of money we've printed to keep it anywhere near the purchasing power it has right now. We either face collapse or do anything possible to keep the world using dollars as the main currency in international trade and foreign reserves. What does everyone think the invasion of Iraq and the destruction of Libya was really about.

@rc8770 Well they'll have to come up with some excuse. I guess that one is as good as any no?

@Rex_Smashington Actually Saudi Arabia is one of the few nations which can get invaded by the United States and the world will secretly be like "eh it's the Saudis maybe this isn't so bad." lol You truly underestimate how hated that nation is, even in the Muslim world.
1
@Rex_Smashington The entire world has nothing to do with that. Only super powerful nations decide who gets punished and who doesn't. For a long time Saudi Arabia has been under the protection of the United States politically and economically for a while now. This simply doesn't mean they're not one of the most hated nations on the planet.
1
@Rex_Smashington Do they go there to "kiss their hand" or to make sure their little pet is behaving? I think it's fairly obvious to everyone on the planet which it is. You better hope America doesn't fall into political chaos and exists the world stage. If it did, Saudi Arabia would probably be invaded within a week by one of the many nations it has pissed off
1
@JT, not just oil. Everything will go up . And when I say up I mean skyrocket. This is all assuming the Saudis actually go through with this, survive it and a bunch of other nations follow. A big if, but if that does happen we're screwed beyond imagination. We'll be paying 25,000 dollars for a Japanese microwave.
