It seems like everyone is playing chess and the European leaders are playing checkers.

@peabase, that isn't what this speech was about. The Turks understand the US is pulling out of Europe and they understand Europe is a sinking ship. What they do want as Europe tries to build a defense industry is to be a part of it so they can get access to the little technology Europe has that they don't have. Europe is dying and everyone else is circling around to take what they can before it drowns.

@peabase Why would anyone "want in" on a military alliance of a bunch of nations with literally zero military might? Unless of course they figure they might get something they need from said alliance? Again there are a few pieces of military tech these nations happen to have access to the Turks want. That is what this is all about. Wanting a military alliance with Europe at face value is akin to making an alliance with a guy in a wheelchair. Makes no sense unless you want something else. Yes American products aren't very good, in fact even talking about American products is kind of ridiculous considering we barely produce anything. Our only saving grace is the fact we literally control the world's currency reserve. We print without consequence so running a huge account deficient isn't as painful (not sustainable but it is what it is) Europe doesn't have that luxury so running a deficit is painful for Europe. The only way they can get into surplus is via America sucking up all of their products like a vacuum cleaner. If we slap tariffs on European products nothing happens to us but Europe gets wrecked. Not to mention Europe can't even produce products efficiently anymore due to the fact they no longer have access to cheap energy. Nor do they have the geostrategic depth to get it. Nor the military might to strong arm other nations in deals. Europe is the sick man of the world right now. A vassal of Washington that Washington now feels isn't worth the hassle or cost. If you're from Europe, get used to being pushed around by nations like Russia and Turkey from here on out.

@utkua, Turkey has decided where they're going to go a long time ago. They won't be aligning with the Russians either. They'll also pretend to be aligned with Europe until they extract all the defense tech left for them to extract. Most nations aren't stupid, they know a sinking ship when they see one. And Europe is a sinking ship.

Europe isn't in a position to request or dictate anything to anyone. Nations smell blood, so they're dictating their terms in diplomatic speak.

@jetterbenne2578 fail to see how needing x export market would make you want to join their military industrial complex

@ Doesn't seem like the US is targeting Turkey anymore than it has done in the last 10 years. The US also isn't behaving like an enemy of Europe, it is simply saying it won't be a backstop for them anymore, AKA Europe needs to learn to take care of itself. This as everyone along with the Europeans know makes Europe weak. Regional powers realize this and are swirling over it's carcass. That is exactly what Turkey is doing, they see the blood in the water and they're circling like sharks. This isn't Europe's first sense of the real world in quite a long time and they don't like it.

@ibizaa4603. It doesn't matter who is and who isn't part of that sinking ship. What matters is other nations are swirling around Europe's dying body to grab what they can. This is what this speech was about. Europe is in a position to be dictated too, not in a position to dictate to anything to anyone, let alone telling them to "sit down"

@frcluc, why exactly would they do that? They're only in Nato to prevent this from happening. Why would they shoot themselves in the foot? Most nations outside of Europe aren't in the habit of shooting themselves in the foot.
