The fact they didn't have to deal with a civilization destroying colonization is probably one of the main reasons they're by far the most advanced nation in that part of the world.

@ΒαγγεληςΝοτης If only 1600 people died in such a huge operation, I'd say that is a pretty well disciplined army. Hell 10x more people than that died when America sieged just one city in the Iraq war. You're literally proving the guy's point with your post without even realizing it.

I'm not sure how far back you'd have to go before that island was owned by the Greeks. The Ottomans took it from the Venetians in the 1500s. The British took it from the Ottomans in the late 1800s. Before the Venetians I think the Egyptians had it and at some point the Syrians too. So I don't understand the logic of asking why the Island isn't "part of Greece." That Island in the past 1000 years or so has been controlled by everybody and their mother except the Greeks.

@okhanuludag You might want to do a little research on the matter before spouting childish one liners.

@grragor Unless he moved out to the Ege region where people aren't genetically damaged from inbreeding I doubt he would have stayed.

@Cyborgism_is_Future No it wasn't. In the past 1000 years or so that island has been controlled by everyone except the Greeks. The Egptians had it, the Syrians had it. The Venetians took it, then the Ottomans took it from the Venetians in the 1500s only to lose it to the British in the late 1800s. I fail to see how Greece fits into this equation.

@elenilepouri7253 Most the people you're referring to on the island are essentially Arabs who speak Greek. Take a look at the DNA gene pool of the island for god's sake. Hell forget that, look at their faces. Take a South Cypriot and throw them in the street in Bagdad and they'll fit right in, no one will know the difference.

@elenilepouri7253 If the people in the north are the Barbarians, why is it the people of the south were the ones who attempted a Hitler style ethnic cleansing campaign against the minority in the north? Hmmm Look up the definition of the term barbarian and what defines a barbarian. Then compare it to the actions of the people on the south side of Cyprus. You might find some similarities.

@elenilepouri7253 So the fact the invasion was spurred on by a majority group on the island going full Adolf Hitler on a minority group is going to be ignored? Seriously? We're just going to sweep it under the rug and pretend it never happened? Fact of the matter is that invasion stopped a massive genocide attempt. Not to mention there hasn't been any fighting on that island since. I'd call that a success story. I guess you consider it a failure because you wanted the ethnic cleansing to be completed.

The Venetians could make the same argument considering they had it taken from them by the Ottomans. I guess the Egyptians and Syrians can make an argument for the Island as well. I do fail to see what claim Greece has on that island considering they haven't controlled it in over 1000s years, perhaps more.

Greece was in a much tougher spot. If it stayed neutral Italy would have invaded them anyway and the Germans would have joined. If it joined the Axis, well as you know all the Axis nations were destroyed. Not sure Greece policy makers had the luxury to just ride the fence due to their geography.

@mertkuzgun5953 I'd imagine geography played a role as well. Especially if you know the strategy of the Italians for the region
1
@mertkuzgun5953 Oh they can be quite extreme when a neighboring state (Italy) has put it in her head she wants your territory. That is like claiming Greece feels the effects of the Syrian war the same way Turkey does because "they're right next to each other." This simply isn't true.

@mixalhsdanas2930 According to that logic everyone in America, Australia, New Zealand and countless other nations should simply pick up and leave their homes? Because another civilization was there thousands of years ago? Yea, good luck trying to convince the world of that precedent lol
