What Europe wants and what Europe is willing to pay for are two different things.

@DeadKraken Europe can't be energy independent because they don't have enough energy. They have to purchase it.

@benjamindavidovichwaals2899 Comparing Europe's reach during WW1 and WW2 to today is kind of a stretch. Europe's nations were world super powers with global reach around that time. Today they are not.

@DeadKraken Humans are nowhere near being at a point where we don't need fossil fuels. Also the idea of Ukraine in the EU is a pipedream, Russia invaded Ukraine in part so that won't happen. Even if Ukraine were in the EU, Ukraine doesn't have enough fossil fuels to make the EU energy independent. Fact of the matter is, EU won't be energy independent.

The western Europeans generally view eastern Europe as a simple buffer between them and chaos. They view them as children who need to be controlled. This fact has not gone unnoticed in eastern European capitals.

@Jacob Bernard, You mean for European stability. European military autonomy will mean nothing for the rest of the world.

@YG-fm2wv Yes they have insane inflation with their economy in the toilet, yes their democracy leaves much to be desired. But Kurdish genocide? Seriously bro?

@robertevans2450 They'll be more than happy if their plane which is in the works is slightly better than an F-16. So them being caught on radar is a given and they know that. As far as engines they're far off making engines capable of supercruise. But they've got options in buying the jet engines.

@robertevans2450 It's fairly obvious to anyone watching this from outside that their economy is in shambles. 1. I have no idea how that will effect their building of this plane. Neither do you. 2. Not sure what any of that has to do with how this plane will perform. You seem emotionally invested in this, it's strange.

@General Electric, England too was once what America is today. However unlike France England understands it's role in the international system and plays within that role. France is that former bully that everyone now laughs at when it tries to project power.

Underrated comment.

If you look at French actions over the past 10 years, watching them fumbling around trying to gain global influence has been nothing short of delusional on their part. France would be better served to understand their role in the international system and work within that understanding. Instead of attempting hardball tactics only to have it blow up in their face. You can only do this so many times before you become a laughing stock on the international stage anytime you try to push something. France will always be outproduced by Germany and out influenced by England. Hell even Turkey is starting to score goals on France when they butt heads. So the idea of French hegemony is ridiculous, even talking about it makes me laugh.

@joey199412 The European Union will collapse long before his grandchildren even understand the concept of what you're claiming will happen.

No one outside of Tallin and Vilnius knows or cares to know how these irrelevant corners of the world are spelled. Also eastern European nations have a negative view of Russia because they're terrified of Russia, who can blame them considering the history. So it was only natural for them before the war in Ukraine to bring Russia into the European fold which would make them A LOT less likely to show aggression toward them.

@mikevarga6742 Irrelevant to 99% of the planet. Your emotions on the issue won't change this reality. This has nothing to do with a Brit point of view, you can take a poll of the entire planet and you'll find this to be the case.

Europe's soft power isn't nearly what it used to be. Their level of influence around the world is drying up by the day.
