  4. This is a very interesting topic. While leaders of nations like this live in the real world and make pragmatic decisions which are beneficial to their base. European leaders have gone down the road of living in a world of narratives, almost hostage to them. Living in a world of narratives (facts be damned) also filters down to the mainstream. Take this video for example, using terms like authoritarian strongman are quite childish and a consequence of living in that narrative fantasy world cage. Then in the beginning of the video talking about how the EU stalled Turkey because of democracy, or this or that or Cyprus is again living in a fantasy world of false narratives. No one wants to talk about the extremely obviously and 800lbs elephant in the room. Turkey is a huge nation with an extremely large and growing population not to mention has a bit of a chip on their shoulder when it comes to the Europeans. Everyone knows Europe isn't run via the consensus of it's members but more so is dominated by larger powers like France and Germany. They essentially set policy and bully everyone else into it. They protect their clout and influence within the organization by almost any means necessary. So ask yourself a simple question, why would these two nations allow an extremely large and influential nation into the block that they can't control? All this would do is dilute the power of France and Germany within the block. Due to it's sheer size in the next few decades Turkey will have over 100 million people. Think about how much voting power that gives Turkey within EU decision making mechanisms, not to mention both Paris and Berlin know they won't be able to influence the voting of that country as much as they'd like. Not to mention with their voting power they'd ensure a large chunk of EU funds will flow directly into their country. So no, Turkey wasn't blocked from the EU because of their economy, their democracy or the Cyprus problem. They were blocked because there is no way on god's green earth that Germany and France would willingly enter a situation where their power and influence would be challenged, diminished and diluted. No nation can admit this, so obviously they have to come up with every other excuse under the sun which doesn't sound as Machiavellian as this. I've been saying this for 20 years, the idea of Turkey entering the EU is nothing short of a pipedream. It really isn't in the cards nor will it ever be. The real politik foundations of this happening simply aren't there. We can sit here and nibble around the edges at a million other secondary reasons why Turkey should or shouldn't be in the EU but again all of it is completely irrelevant.
