You are right, the Levant was repeatedly conquered & re-conquered over the millennia. But these conquerors NEVER made the Land of Israel their distinct homeland. Ancient Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Abbasids, Crusaders, Mongols, Umayads, Mamlukes, Turks and Brits conquered the area. But none of these considered the area to be their core homeland.
"The Palestinians" was the name given to the Israelis before 1948. These terms were Hebrew/ Jewish entities before 1948:
Palestine Post
Palestine Philharmonic Orchestra
Anglo-Palestine Bank
Palestine Brigade
Joint Palestine Appeal
Palestine Football Team
After 1948, these entities became Israeli structures. Then, this usage of Palestine gradually fell out of use. In the 1970s, an Egyptian psychopath called Yasser Arafat took the word and massaged it into something completely new.
