That was a tiny fraction of the population during the Dark ages, Middle Ages and Renaissance periods. Maybe 1% ? With Hebrew, most Male Jews were literate or pseudo- literate in Hebrew over much of history, in most geographical locations. Judaism requires all adherents to be literate or at least semi-literate in this language. This, most linguistics would class Ancient Hebrew to be a living language.

In the 1950s and 1960s, 1 million Mizrachi Jews were expelled from gunpoint from Arab states and all their homes, lands and stuff was expropriated. We call this the Jewish Nakba. For some reason, this story is excluded in Europe & America. Google Mizrachi Jews in Israel.
