@rylraven13 IT"S A LEAVE; not a vacation. Also, she gave them a heads-up 4mos in advance. Is it religious discrimination? We gotta let the judge determine that. As far as "clinging to a superstition", you're out of line. You gotta respect people's beliefs just as much as they have to respect your disbelief. You're a principal of a school. Right? You have a teacher or department head that tells you AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SCHOOL YEAR about a scheduling conflict. What do you do? Procrastinate?

@TheSchmuckLook Nonsense. Jewish professionals who follow get all Saturdays off AND Rosh Hoshanah & Tom Kippur off. You're not telling them to move to Israel. She had a responsibility to her students. Tis true. But you're ignoring the fact that she told her bosses about her Hajj in AUGUST. Also, why are you trying to run Americans off to other countries? She has as much a right to be here as anyone else. But most of all, why are you putting "Hajj" in quotations? Is it not tangible to you?

@jpav0923 What you're really doing is trying to Muslim bash under the guise of American purity... which really seems to be White purity if I'm reading the tone of your writing correctly. "adherence to Judeo-Christian blah blah blah" that's shit. The Founding Fathers designed the Bill of Rights (a written explanation of private citizens' relationships with the gov't), to ensure that YOUR philosophy gets found on the cutting room floor.

@TheSchmuckLook You cliam she's "taking advantage of religion & observances". That might be an argument if she didn't do it unpaid or use her pto. Just how stupid ARE you?

@jpav0923 The presiding document, the written contract that occupies the place of authority, is the CONSTITUTION you fucking dufus. I suggest you pull your head out of your ass.
1
@jlair It may not have been in the budget to train the sub to run the math lab. But I agree that the principal didn't look at his options. Considering the fact that she told the administrators at the beginning of the year, someone blew it.
1
@jpav0923 Either way, it doesn't matter. There's a well written provision in this nation's presiding document. This land is for ALL of us. Perhaps YOU should move elsewhere.

Cheers!

@jpav0923 You call yourself a conservative but you're trying to superimpose your values on other people. In addition, you're ignoring context AND the Bill of Rights. You're a fuckwit.
1
@TheSchmuckLook Bullshit. You put it in quotes to marginalize it. There's elective school programing on Saturdays in IL too. Are you gonna make it this easy? Do you know how long Rosh Hoshanah & Yom Kippur last? Go'head. Tell me without googling it. And no. You can't do Hajj in the summer. It's time specific.

@trapedd "fixing it up" IS developing it. Algebra is an arabic term meaning "union". Can we assume that every arab mathematician was a devout Muslim in the deepest recesses of his mind? Of course not. I suspect that people have always been the same therefore there's gray areas. But what we do know is that our number system is arabic. We also know what religion THOSE arabs in THAT period may have claimed.
1
@nhojflow No. Hire the people with the most appropriate qualifications. Religion isn't an issue. The problem is that the administrators are pretending they couldn't replace her temporarily. In truth, the discrepancy is when they were preparing for standardized tests. The "we can't give you the time off" excuse is inadequate.

@jpav0923 Moron. It's NOT a vacation. It's a solemn, religious rite. As far as your estimation of hierarchy of her values (as if you know the woman), you're wrong there too. She's putting her RELIGION 1st. Yes, teaching is a calling but at the end of the day it's still a job & a person has to put SELF 1st in ANY situation. And the US wasn't founded on ANY religious values. It was founded by DEISTS. Freedom of religious practice is right ther in the good ol' Bill of Rights you fuckwit.

@0andrewsmith0 jpav is an idiot. I've already wasted 1000 characters on him (or her). If I were you, I'd leave him to wallow in his own ignorance.

I wonder if people know that "algebra" is an Arabic term.

@jpav0923 Funny. I was talking about a value system you think I'm talking about race. Idiot. And don't think that cherrypicking 2 Uncle Toms is going to get you off the hook. This country is for ALL its citizens not just the Judeo-Christian ones. Either way, this isn't "catering". The principal had all the time in the world to make the adjustments. She didn't ask for pay. Spare me the shit about "assimilation". She obeys the law. That's all she has to do. You're not the culture police.
1
@DocSolomon Bullshit. In America we respect everyone's right to practice whatever religion they so please. And you're talking about employers' discretion now? That all sounds like a solid argument. But after considering 2 critical facts: 1) she gave them 4 (FOUR) months notice. That's AUGUST which is at the beginning of the school year if you remember school. 2) She took it as an unpaid leave. The school dropped the ball. Yes. I get worked up about stupid people.

Since when isn't Hajj an official, religious holiday? Also, you're not her boss. You didn't see her contract. You're not a member of her union. You're in no place to declare what her job is supposed to be. "She was being real selfish to those kids". Hogwash. They could've gotten a sub. I dunno about you but I had subs when I was in school. I remember when my AP Biology teacher needed to take leave. She was also the division chairwoman for the science department. We got a sub. It was no big deal.
1
@jpav0923 A vacation? Since when is a religious rite a vacation? What about Hajj is recreational? The Founding Fathers were Deists & Agnostics. They weren't Christians. Learn some history. Have you ever even READ anything written by Adams, Allen, Payne, Hamilton, Morris or Hancock? Dumbass.

@cam1126 You're an idiot. You can't even generate an original thought.

@witawillie Hajj is done at a specific time every year. You could call it a holiday in that sense. But it's more solemn than it is festive. It's easy to consider Hajj a "religious retreat" but it's not that simple. Irrespective of that, the teacher gave the administrators ample time to adjust to her request. That they didn't want to make the adjustment.
