@wspol624 You're right. Trading & consuming are virtues in Western culture. But there's a problematic element in his behavior. Yes, it's his private life. But he's campaigning to be the most public person in the country. He's not frugal but his "conservative" values imply frugality. Lookit, we all (at least most of us) know that politics is mostly a facade & a soap opera for people with law degrees. But even with the facade, the candidates have to at least pretend to walk the walk.

@imboardnotstupid Ron Paul, H. Ross Perot, Ralph Nader, Roget Calero & even Lenora Fulani all have good ideas. Is it intuitive in the larger discussion to ignore a candidate simply because he/she isn't brand name? All that said, I don't disagree with you about his politics being some right-wing baloney BUT I know we need to have his opinions too. After all, there was a point in history that he was the US's 3rd most powerful man. He's a vet. I don't wanna put him out to pasture just yet.

@wspol624 The GOP essentially went through puberty & went girl crazy. Bachmann, O'Donnell & Palin are all beautiful women. But their politics are crazy. That's why I wanna hear what the salty old vet's gotta say. There's a reason he got to the position of speaker: political cunning. And best believe Obeezy became much stronger because he had to stave off Hillary. In a similar way, Mitt's gonna need to tangle with Newt. And even if you're a bloody cannuck, the POTUS has an effect on your life.

@imboardnotstupid What I "want" him to do isn't of much consequence. I'm saying what he needs to do as a candidate if he wants to secure any kind of base. Again, this is politics. He's running $0.5M tabs at Tiffany's while his constituents have to make serious choices about paying Junior's college fund or buying food. That's not a good look. Also, saying that I shouldn't be concerned because I'm not a republican is dumb. Who says 1 party has all the best ideas? Does party dictate intellect?

@wspol624 I doubt he has a chance. But I'd still like to hear & respect his opinion. He's a political veteran. If he's got a $0.5M worth of juice with a jewelry store, I'd hazard that he's a clever man. I'd like to see if this clever man has some clever ideas about making America better. I'm a progressive (hell I'm radically left) but I don't want to live in a liberal echo chamber. Then again, how can I respect a thrice-married, "family values" guy?

I'll put it a different way. Y'know why Joe Biden had a certain appeal? For 1, he's never been afraid to be an idiot. But secondly, he walked the walked. He didn't rent a condo in DC. He stimulated the economy by using Amtrak. He was a real integrationist back in the day. He didn't whore around after his wife died. He didn't use his family's death for political sympathy. He kept it real (except for all the political bullshit in the primaries when he gave Obeezy a minor diss). Newt, not so much.
