Comments by "upabittoolate" (@upabittoolate) on "Confederate Flag Prom Dress" video.
Actually, the freedom of speech principle means that the gov't can't prosecute or persecute you for dissenting against it. It's got nothing to do with prom dresses. That's the most often misinterpreted principle of the American ethic. As for a peace sign, that's stupid. Don't use false equivalencies. Furthermore, she wasn't thrown out of prom. She was told to change her dress or leave.

I don't need to give you an example. The dress in this video is adequate. Hell, the Jena 6 sequence was started by kids fighting over who gets shade under a fucking tree. Are you going to tell me that, given how silly kids can be, a CONFEDERATE FLAG isn't going to be an issue? If so, I'll say you're being obtuse. As for your Malcolm X anecdote, stealing a prepositional phrase & not even reading the sentence is silly. You're trying to create false equivalencies. You're failing at that.

Actually you do have that right. I can't come up to you & start berating you without there being legal repercussion. A citizen has the constitutional right to not be fucked with. In any case, if the girl is wearing a dress that might start shit, the administrators have the right to tell her to change the dress. The same goes for a girl wearing a prom dress that's too revealing.

How I think doesn't matter. What's paramount here is what's potentially an issue & the decision that the administration made. That girl could've expressed herself in a myriad of ways. But in truth, she doesn't know any history, she's just projecting some neo-conservative pastiche. In any case, you haven't framed an actual argument. You never do.

It has an offensive symbol on it. You;re talking about "improper words"? That's weak. So I guess you think it';s okay to rock a dress with a picture of a toddler that was mauled by a pitbull too. It's extremely simple, the ADMINISTRATORS make the call.

No. He is not.

That's nonsense. I'm talking about wearing a shirt that might cause a riot; not mild discomfort from a an ironic t-shirt. MY anecdote was extremely cut & dry. No, I can NOT walk up to you & start berating you. Hence your American entitlement to some relative piece of mind.

"We declare our right on this earth to be a man, to be a human being, to be respected as a human being, to be given the rights of a human being in this society, on this earth, in this day, which we intend to bring into existence by any means necessary." Yeah, that's offensive. Homosexuals declaring their rights. Yeah, that's offensive. Someone poking fun at an imaginary man in the sky in a country where freedom of religion (or non-religion) is protected by the BofR. Yeah, that's offensive. Fail.

This isn't a free speech issue, you chowderhead. The "free speech" premise is that the GOVERNMENT can't hassle you for dissenting. If she wanted to make a political statement, she can write a footnoted, research paper. The promenade is a private, social event that has a fucking dress code. If the people who were chaperoning the party thought it was inappropriate, they get to make the call. She needs to save that dress for a Klan rally, Civil War reenactment or a Dixie parade.

I agree. The administrators should absolutely refund her for the ticket price (if she bought her own ticket. I bought mine & my date's). But as far as "making a statement" goes, I've heard the young lady (for lack of a more fitting term) speak. She's no graphic artist or political pundit. She's just a teenager who's been poorly educated & more poorly misled by a home environment that would let her even think of fearing that dress.
