Agreed.

I totally agree with that. But to expect the trained professionals not to be corrupt just because they aren't mandated to stay on the up & up is a fallacy in itself. What I'm saying is that I'm all for good regulations & if that means voting for this guy or that guy, it's the best I can do 'cause I don't weld. The same goes for you as a voter who pays taxes that pay guys like me. Again, I don't take for granted that a politician isn't taking advice from a politician... unless he's republican

Indeed. There's no substitute for experience. But you, yourself, just got done saying that you disseminated your valuable information through lectured precepts. As an experience guy, you know that's not very good. As for qualification/political power ratios, I think what I said was you should think about sharing some of your experience. As for your attempted knocks on communism, you stretched pretty far to get that red herring to use as a strawman.

Yes. The law is the law. But couldn't the spirit of the laws be argued too? In the face of more serious crimes, isn't sending through the judicial system of a pack of cookies, that retails >$4/pk, a little excessive? If you were the manager, wouldn't you just say, "I understand your need to snack to keep your energy up but in order to deter shrinkage, it's our store's policy that employee pay for merchandise just like patrons"? Laws have to reflect reason & human existence too.

Why make the assumption that college-educated people haven't worked a day in their lives? And even if I've never been a welder, like yourself, isn't it less than smart to assume that I can't be concerned about things, like occupational safety, too? I've never been a welder but I'd like to think that anything I could do, like voting for an official that insures your jobsite safety, is always gonna be commonly good. C'mon, bro.
1
So you're using your personal anecdote of 4 educated people to argue against education? And for that matter, don't you think it might be helpful to SHARE your ideas about safety with everyone instead of lecturing to them like a tenured professor? Hell, I might vote for a guy like you because you've actually got something valuable to offer Rosie the Riveter & Average Joe Goodwrench. Why are we working against each other instead of with each other? Oh yeah. That'd be communist.

In fairness, his parents' ability to provide some advantages for him isn't hte object of shame. In fact, you'd call him a fool for not capitalizing. There's nothing wrong with being a blacksmith. It's an honest living just like any other honest living. If you were (or are) so hung up on going to school then just go. He's not an elitist for having a college education any more than you're the salt of the earth for not having 1.

So if I'm astute enough to envision you being a private contractor, I'm astute enough to know that a workplace standard like properly ventilated shops (I imagine you use acetylene & oxygen to run a bead) as a legal standard isn't unreasonable. I imagine having a standard regulation that governs protective gear isn't unreasonable either. I'm college-educated. I'm a "Midwest Ivy Leaguer" too. I don't think that makes me elite to want safety for anyone who chooses to be a smithy for a career.
1
He was directing that at me because I said, "I imagine you use oxygen or acetylene hence ventilation isn't a bad standard to maintain". I guess we're all blitzing him with comments & he struggles to juggle.

Les Miserables.

You're assuming that the elected official isn't getting some kind consultation about safety standards from someone in that industry. I've worked in health care too. I don't have a problem voting for a guy who wasn't in health care as long I'm convinced he's got some understanding of what I do. You're making the fallacious argument of appealing to authority. I don't need to flip burgers as a job to know I want my food handler's to have clean hands. Do I?

She wasn't stealing for her basic survival. Also, "survival" isn't the same thing for you & me because I can't pretend to speak for you. That said, the best solution here would've been for the shift manager to make her pay for the cookies & remind her of store policy. The felony charge is only gonna tie up that nearing-retirement aged woman in bullshit. I do wanna ask though. If a drunk driver injures another person while tryna avoid pending jeopardy, isn't that drunk person still negligible?

I know what you meant. I was just declaring my own stance so it wasn't misconstrued. :)

That's a fair point.

I'm not a welder or a plumber or an assembly line worker. In fact, I'm a teacher. I'm still working class. I still know what a hard day's work is. I've worked in front of & behind a curing oven in a paper factory outside Chicago in July. I think you're presuming he's a member of the petty bourgeois because he's talking about pre-Bolshevik Russia. In all fariness (again) it was controlled by monarchy. That's problematic too.
1
And yes, I'm a socialist who often votes democratic (unless the gubernatorial candidate is a republican because, as a native Chicagoan, I know republicans aren't all selfish, counter-educational buffoons).
1
I've heard of welders making between $16-$35/hr myself. It's a good living if you can make it. You're right. Then again, maybe he's in business for himself & he has to work those hours to maintain his contractual obligations.. maybe.

Who told you that communism & profits are diametrically opposites?
1
It's not socially just to promote communal health? M'kay.
1
If you think communism is the "epitome of elitism", I suggest you look despots & monarchs. Stalin, Mao & Lenin built monuments because they were megalomaniacs. Their communism was incidental. Communism, at its highest aspiration, tries to manage everyone in a balance. Also, there's nothing in communism that says a craftsman makes as much as a custodian. Read Max Weber. Also, economic pressure isn't what makes people become doctors or engineers or tradesmen like yourself.

It's probably complicated because she was an employee.

I didn't imply anything. I said "I imagine..." Protip: don't put words in someone's mouth especially when that someone is making an effort to understand your point of view (despite the fact that he may disagree with it). Also, I've created no false dichotomies. It's YOU who sprained his shoulder from over-patting his own back for working with his hands while calling the college kid an elitist. I'm asking question because I'm curious about the answers. Answer or not but don't project.

As for me teaching, it's math. And yes, you have every right to demand that I don't pass students who can't do arithmetic. That's a fair expectation for you because you're paying taxes just like me & many other voters. Also, don't assume I'm just talking about a majority (although we live in a majority ruling society) advantage. I'm talking about basic reason. What are YOU talking about?
