@davefgranger No. It's been happening for a long time now. The quality of American goods saw a huge & continuing decline after the '50s. The truth is that we can't do many of the jobs anymore because our educational system pays more attention to non-practical things. I'm not saying that literature & other liberal arts aren't important. But what I AM saying is that shop class is 1 of the 1st places that kids learn quality control, craftsmanship & how things are done.

@CrossTheGrigori And damn, if people don't know how to get a flat roast, bind it with twine, pierce it with a knife & stuff the piercings with garlic & herbs, we're SCREWED as a country. We'll be slaves to Kraft & Libby's. Both my parents are excellent cooks so I'M a good good. Both of my parents are accomplished do-it-yourselfers in their own rights so I'M an accomplished d-i-yer. But I fear this country is losing that can-do attitude that made us great.

@bobino2468 Now YOU know what I'm talking about. The system has knocked things out of balance. Also, the tracking method, at least the 1 they used when I was in high school, robs kids of important learning opportunities. I have a high school classmate & friend who recently finished his PhD in technical writing. It's fine to be able to critique a discipline of study & present the ideas to your peers. But the guy can't change a fucking tire. WTF?

@d3st88 I think this story is saying that modern people are losing many of these practical skills. I'm a man (35yrs old) & my parents made sure I had a skillset so I could live. As far as "female" skills goes, I think it boils down to things like washing certain textiles the proper way, using baking powder & clabbered milk for biscuits (or using yeast) & what solutions work best to clean what stains. Yes, these are things that women should know... they're also things EVERYONE should know.

@d3st88 Believe it or not, people don't know how to go into to system tools & clean their disks either. People don't know how to send an email & make virtual files. Hell, people don't even know grammar anymore. I actually had a guy try argue that a "mute point" is a proper idiom in lieu of "moot point". It's scary that people don't know how to use a needle & thread. I milked my 1st cow 3yrs ago & I'll never forget that experience nor its value. I don't hunt but I was taught to fish. I'll eat.

@CrossTheGrigori Yup. And believe it or not, people don't even know how to use their computers anymore. Shit, people don't even use correct grammar anymore. I had a friend who was using my computer in my office & she didn't even how to send herself an email as a way of saving a document. Ironically, that document was a resume for a job as an administrative assistant. No disrespect to her but it was kinda like she'd lived life painting by numbers.

@CrossTheGrigori Nevertheless, I think this is more of a tongue-in-cheek discussion about the modern generation's lack of practical skills. People think I'm bragging when I talk about having built things or worked on many cars. But in my own construct it's second nature because my parents wouldn't have it any other way. It's a shame. The real reason this country's labor is being outsourced is because we can't (or won't) do the jobs anymore.

@CrossTheGrigori I heard a comedian put it the best, He said that American males are becoming a nation of dudes. We used to be MEN. MEN with tools who built things; fixed things. But now, DUDES have to call MEN to do things.

@CrossTheGrigori Believe it or not, I had a girlfriend who didn't know how to use a broom. She also had no concept of cooking. She'd leave dirty dishes in the kitchen 'til the grime hardened then she didn't know to soak them prior to scrubbing them. There was also a time she wouldn't help me tie down a rolled rug to the roof of my car. Her claim was that she didn't know how & she flat-out refused to help me. When I last saw her, she was 33 & didn't even have a driver's license.
