but you don't understand the felling of being categorically judged as less because of your skin color. you don't know what it means to be considered a serial criminal because of your skin color either. remember, you've never been exposed to racism. there's a whole leg of "science" that's been designed for people to validate their ideas of white supremacy. that's a problem. middle passage happened for 439yrs. that's a problem. 120M africans died. that's a problem.

no, we have not had any conversation beyond self serving rhetoric. i'll assume you're not black; correct me if i'm wrong. apparently you don't understand the feelings of siege that most black people in this country feel. but if you want to know what he meant, i'd love to talk to you about it. whadayagot?

damn that was harsh as hell. good stuff though. he'd rather ignore these issues & continue atty. holder's cowardice than actually address use this as a platform to talk & gain some real understanding. i think he's sam wurzelbacher's next door neighbor
1
that's all you get from what was being said here? listen again

it's fairly easy to say "i was never exposed to racism" but you actually have & just don't know it. it's fairly easy to say "get over it". but you haven't even addressed what we're supposed to be "getting over". right now, there's a huge elephant in the room. no one wants to talk about it. your philosophy is to "get over it". that ain't workin' my friend

the system? the untrue depictions in history, the media that puts black men in jail more than in college (there's actually more brothers in college than jail). the practice of racial profiling. the notion that blacks are less intelligent (even though they do better on college entrance exams). the music industry that uses 'nigga' like it's a fucking pronoun. i could continue but i think you can add to this list if you think hard enough

your comment is part of the problem. talking about feelings as though they're trite isn't helping anyone individually nor is it improving race relations. in fact, your indignance is the self serving rhetoric of which i spoke. not that you need permission to make a comic, have you even asked me what bugs me about it? have you ever asked a black man why he feels as though he's a target? have we addressed the realities about slavery & its collateral effects?

i'll ask you a more profound question now: what has to happen in order for us to move toward a post-racial america? ie, isn't it time we re-wrote the social contract (see rousseau) to fit all humans? what can we do to deal with the institutional racism that's an integral part of the american fiber?
1
all sharpton does not represent anyone but his own organization. by his own admission, he's an activist who brings attention to issues. while it's your choice to be offended by the cartoon or not, you'd be lying if you said you didn't recognize the possibility of an implied racial connotation. that said, you be lying if you said "i can't understand the reason for the hoopla". i'm not attacking you, i'm asking for your honesty & empathy. BUT, the comic is in bad taste. we can all agree there
1
again, i hold no animosity toward you or anyone. i hate the ignorance, miseducation & bad leadership that has generated the stereotypes & misunderstandings. i hate that institutional racism & the white supremacist agenda has designed a construct that isn't letting many people see the forest. but knowing how blacks are treated in the us & given the history, don't you see why the cartoon was in bad taste?
1
mind you, i don't know what your race is. if you're white, i don't blame you for anything. i don't hold you accountable for what you don't know. BUT, i think it's incumbent on you to look at a side other than your own. as a citizen of the planet earth & of this country you need to know there's quite a bit of tension because something major has been left unresolved.
1
i said "see rousseau's social contract" earlier. look at it so you can see what i mean. i called bs because it was inconsistent with what you said. but here's the thing, people are going to change themselves as they please; that's not my issue. my issue is that we need an overhaul of the system that programs us.
1
i haven't equated anything. i've pointed out institutional racism & tried to help you understand why the conversation (beyond self serving rhetoric) needs to be had. like i said, i don't blame anyone for being born white. i blame them for not recognizing the multiple dynamics of the problem
1
i like cenk's point. racist or not, we need to talk about it. if he is he should say so. if he's not, he needs to now what could be offensive about it
1
you're presupposing that it's only black people that are offended or that only black people see the possible implication of a racial perjorative. i don't think you really understand what racism is. why do i say that? because you made a blanket statement about an entire race identified group. if someone is bi-racial then, by your postulate, are they only half offended? so much for that undergrad degree
1
it's difficult for me to believe that you've looked at it from another angle given that you already stated that you've never been exposed to racism. also, you claim you have no racism within you. honestly, i'm calling bullshit. but here's what i'm asking. when will the social contract be re-written? when can we just be people? it's hard enough as it is, why does race have to add another dimension? you strike me as a smart person & i ask all these questions in earnest
