@Asymmatrix There's no such thing as reverse racism. Spare me the cliches. You keep talking about Al being a bad choice to comment with extremely vague explanations as to why. Then when you get cornered, you resort to namecalling. Unless you can tell me why Sharpton, for whatever reason you may present, isn't telling the truth here, you've lost this argument.
1
@Motionedout EXACTLY! Any time a person is considered 1/5 of a man, there's something awry. I'm not saying thta's the public opinion now but damned if that's not part of what's shaped things now.
1
@gir908922 And if you think you don't have rights, I suggest you email your congressperson & get yourself a pocket Constitution. I served in the USAF. You're goddamned right I have RIGHTS. I don't know about you but I earned my shit.
1
@gir908922 It's a horrible word to use in any context. that said, you're making a straw man argument AND you're ignoring the context. A comedian saying "nigga" is an attempt at art. Shoddy or not, that's what it is. In addition to pointing out life's ironies, comedians jobs to be jesters; fools. You & I well know that much. I can't tell a joke about greenhorn Koreans but Margaret Cho can. That's not a double standard, that's a simple, old school principle.
1
@Asymmatrix That's nonsense. Sharpton was being an activist. In his own words, he was bringing attention to an issue. Sure he was wrong. But does that reflect the entire American narrative of Black women being subjugated? Hardly. Nevertheless, I'll present this a question: Warts & all, how does Sharpton's track record (as you're implying it) detract from the truth he speaks in THIS video clip? If you can't/won't answer that question it tells me you're only interested in ad hominem debate.
1
@gir908922 Yes. It matters. The only way to ever understand each other is to understand what matters.
1
@gir908922 You're either missing or ignoring the broader context. It's not just the fact that she used the word. It's the fact that she tried to postulate about some monolithic "Black think". It's the fact that instead of rendering advice, she told the woman "you shouldn't have married outside your race". It's the fact that she tried to tell the woman how to feel when the woman was asking about coping strategies.

@Yahaziff You can't use that argument to prove that the criminal justice system is racist. Of course not because the only data you have for analysis is convictions & arrests. But you CAN examine what's criminalized & who's more aggressivley pursued by law enforcement. At no point did Sharpton make an argument about causation. He merely pointed out correlation. Is it a sneaky way of implying consequence? Sure. But you an't just put words in the man's mouth.
1
@Yahaziff No. He didn't say that's BECAUSE of racism, he pointed out the lack of racial equality. That ain't the ame thing Yaz. At no point did he present a corollary. Again, it's a sneaky rhetorical trick but you'll never get him to cop to having played it. Nevertheless, the data is already there. The studies about racial profiling? Done. The statistical examination about convictions? Done. The lack of educational balance due to underfunding? Done. You can't deny that.
1
@Asymmatrix You idiot, true is true. And Al is speaking the truth right now. Hypocritical? How so?
1
@Asymmatrix No. You never answered the question. I'll ask again: what does Tawanna Brawley have to do with the truth that Al Sharpton is speaking in THIS video?
1
@Asymmatrix Maybe Al DOES blame the cops. So fucking what? That has nothing to do with THIS video. And it's fairly easy to use buzzwords like "race baiter", "media whore" & "opportunist". But it takes real intellectual integrity to examine what a person is saying. You have not done that because you're too busy living in 1987 & shouting down 15yr girls.
1
@gir908922 You may work hard but I almost got my Black ass shot off in Sarajevo. And nevertheless, this isn't about political parties. Like I said, if it were an issue of race, then by your reasoning, people would've voted for the other candidates or not voted for Obama at all. But then again, i'm talking to someone who didn't even register. So why should I respect your opinion on racial polity if you have no politics? Really, I want to understand. Why should I?
1
@Asymmatrix He's an opportunist because Cenk asked him to comment? Are you gonna blame the media whore or the media pimp? Better yet, why aren't you gonna blame yourself for allowing him to be a spectacle to you? But beyond that, what does ANY of that have to do with the truth that Al speaks H-E-R-E?
1
@gir908922 ie, you're not pointing anything out to me because it's truth is only at the surface. Upon deepr analysis, your premise doesn't hold much water.
1
@Asymmatrix You're reaching now. There's no evidence that he knew she was lying. Lemme guess, you're gonna present that wiki article. Right? Try something stronger. Like I said, you're only interested in ad hominems if you won't answer the question I asked. But I'll repeat it: What does the Tawanna Brawley incident, despite his critical error, have to do with THIS video? I can't wait to hear your answer. You'll probably just repeat your 1st premise; you'll reset a la Sarah Palin.
1
@Asymmatrix That's Brawley & her lawyers. That's NOT Al Sharpton. Nice try. But you've made a strawman. I'll repeat the question: WHAT DOES TAWANNA BRAWLEY HAVE TO DO WITH THIS VIDEO? Sure, Sharpton is the obvious, common element. BUT, that issue has nothing to do with THIS issue. The fact that you're sidestepping me means tht you aren't really interested in truth or intellectual discourse. You're just throwing salt on Al. Dislike him all you want. You're allowed. But have some integrity.
1
@NCAJAX What the HELL does Tawanna Brawley have to do with THIS video? While we're at it, WTF does Ground Zero have to do with a mosque? At the end of the day, if I buy a piece of land, no matter where it's located, it's mine to develop as I choose. A mosque is no different than a Ba'Hai temple or a cathedral or synagogue. Stop arguing false equivalencies. ARRGH! You guys are imbeciles.
1
@Asymmatrix WTF does Tawanna Brawley have to do with THIS video? Why don't you try SUBSTANCE? That'll serve you better than fruit of a poison tree arguments.
1
@guyincognito84 Who's blaming? We're identifying the roots of the problems. Yes, Jamal & Tameka need to be handling their business better. But at the same time, you must understand that Jamal & Tameka (usually) didn't grown up with the same access to resources as Josh & Amy. A major contributing factor to that lack of access IS from structural & institutional racism.
1
@Asymmatrix Dude, Sharpton anted up for Brawley's share. And at the end of the day, when you sue, you sue the person with the cash. Did that little nugget escape you or did you think it was about "principle"? Get some facts other than a wiki article. Irrespective, how does any of that mean he's wrong HERE? If I give a wrong answer in math class, does that mean I can count & I'm never allowed to answer a question again? Hardly. He was wrong. So what? He's not wrong about Dr. Laura HERE.
1
@gir908922 But don't you understand that Dr. Laura framed it that way & THAT'S part of why we're not happy with her? Do you not also understand that in saying what she said, she let the whole world know just how racist she is? Like I said before, there were 4 (FOUR) Black candidates. So don't give me that baloney about his Blackness earing him the White House. If that was the case, Jesse Jackson would've already won the presidency in '80 & '88.
1
@Asymmatrix Better yet, let's butch up & answer the fucking question. Let's NOT make strawman & fruit of a poison tree arguments. Let's develop intellectual honesty. You should try THAT.
1
@Asymmatrix What I get is that you're sidestepping the question. I'll assume it's because you'd rather stay wrapped up in your strawman. Genius.
1
@gir908922 So the difference between me talking about my family & you talking about my family is incidental? That's not only untrue, it's also dumb. I hate that word but I recognize that nuance. Given that context, so do you. And for the record, there were 4 (FOUR) Black candidates. If it was a race thing, people could've voted for McKinney, Keyes, Fulani or Harris. Also, by your reasoning White folks would've elected McCain. Learn some civics before you you make such lousy conclusions.
1
@chairde Touche. She's not a psychologist. She's a physiologist. Fair enough. But I don't think that absolves her of racial insensitivity. Does it?
1
@lazykid1 Anyone is capable of being racist. Although Black people aren't in a position of systemic power, any Black kid can make racist decisions about where he wants to buy his sneakers & potato chips. Any Black women can make decisions about who she dates. Any Black college student can screw someone over in a study group simply because his classmate was White. But I agree with your concept of "degree". We, as a group, don't carry that kind of power.
1
@guyincognito84 Al didn't allude to racism being the culprit, he said it's part of "the structure" and is therefore a factor. And it goes deeper than you think. Access to jobs is connected to quality of education is connected to social condition is connected to race. You & I may have both gone to the school in the same state or even the same city. But I think we both know that there's disparities. It gets down to minute details like names & language. You can't deny that.
1
@gir908922 Is everybody doing it on her syndicated radio show? Hardly.
1
@gir908922 I'm not saying she's a racist. Inb fact, I called no 1 racist. BUT, we're talking about Dr. Laura, a PSYCHOLOGIST, lacking sensitivity. The fact that Dr. Laura tried to be the thought police THEN ran behind 1st Amendment endowment (she did it improperly I might add). Irrespective, there is not a double standard in this case. Like I said, I can talk about my family but you can't. That's how it is. And don't vote, throw away you rights. Fine by me.
