Stop quoting Limbaugh, Mr. Obama NEVER wrote that. Dipshit.

Don't get me wrong, people complaining about Obama not wearing a dumbass lapel pin (that was probably made in Taiwan) made me crazy. People complaining about him in that scene, w/Edwards & Clinton, not holding his hand over his heart equally vexed me. And yes, patriotism is something that comes from within & I've no right to dictate that for another. BUT as a citizen, I think there's a special measure of respect that we should treat the Stars & Stripes.

There's a specific way that the flag is to be treated. But I was thinking the same thing, it's NOT a flag, it's an abstract depiction of the flag. In a sense, it may be intended as an abstract depiction of the American ideal. This artist is superimposing his (and many other citizens') notions over an abstract of the American ideal; in a way he's putting them together. This is light years away from "defacing Old Glory".

I'm not talking about the flag code for civilians. In addition, the Supreme Court ruled W as the winner on the '00 Election. I'm not tryna start nothin', but are you gonna cherry pick a Supreme Court ruling? We could go on about that for days.

I think the flag is a symbol. Of what I'm not sure but you should consider the symbolic purpose of the flag. Sure, a car is just a hunk of metal. But your car is something special to you simply because it's yours. Otherwise give me the keys.

Lemme rephrase that. There's an unwritten law among buddies that you don't go for their girlfriends & even after they break up, you ask permission. It's just 1 of those things. What I'm trying to say is that although he's fucking repugnant, Beck isn't guilty because it's a likeness of the flag not a flag. In much the same way that artist isn't guilty. BUT there's a specified way we treat a real flag & I don't give a damn what the Supreme Court ruled.

"you people". Idiot, I'm a radical. Either way though, your mainstream political analysis doesn't impress me much. Can you generate any original ideas or are you just gonna quote the plagiarize shit from the blogosphere?

I hate to say "agree to disagree" but I think we're gonna hafta in this case. I can't argue legal precedents set & you won't engage the "spirit" of the issue. That's cool. What counts is that we aren't diametrically opposed. You prefer concretes & I may be more comfortable with abstractions. That's cool. To your credit, you didn't treat it like a dichotomy. I admire that. Peace.

There's plenty of arguments that can test merit but that's not my point. For what it's worth, there have been flag desecration amendments proposed more than once. What I'm trying to say is that there's principles & standards governing how the flag is to be treated. Sure, these are all symbolic abstractions (unless you're in the military then they're quite concrete) that need to be acknowledged if you consider yourself a citizen. I'm as radical-leftist as it gets. But I respect the flag.

True, but that little old lady might just very well appreciate my concern. They usually do. Yes, I'm a 34yo boy scout that still helps old ladies across streets. It's kinda corny but fuck it, I think it's good karma. If it were my ma, I'd appreciate someone helping her.

America was founded by liberals you putz.

While I don't totally disagree w/you, I always caution against wrapping 1's self in the glory of the 1st amendment. In fact, you can't just do anything with the flag then run behind civil liberty. There's a specific code to which the flag must be handled.

I think the other thing I'm saying that there's an American ethos whose expression goes beyond any law or Supreme Court ruling. I'm not legally obliged to help an old lady across the street but man-law says that I better help her before Mr. T shoots me with that Snicker rifle.

That comment was shear genius.
