@trufbetold You must not deal with kids. You must not understand the meaning of the word "poverty". Taxing the poor isn't going to improve behavior. In fact, economic strain added to poverty only increases rates of petty & violent crimes. I can show the data if you like.

@dkamouflage Be careful about the comments you publish. You could make a conservative's head explode.

They're getting the kids prepared for the eral world. Don't disrupt class. Save the clowning for after school. The gum-chewing & untied laces shit is overboard. And stealing a kid's summer with "summer behavior class" is horseshit too. How about getting them involved in Upward Bound or science camp? Why not ENCOURAGE the kids to behave well rather than trying to figure out how to tax them. They don't have jobs. They don't even have the means to pay the fines.

@dkamouflage You get the parents involved by insisting there are more parent-teacher conferences & by strengthening the PTA. There's no logic in "enumerating" a set of behaviors then taxing kids whose families can scarcely keep the cupboard full, let alone pay these stupid fines. There's an age-old way of helping kids learn accountability: making them stay after school. These are not a good application of hte negative reinforcement theory.

@trufbetold They're nonsense. I've TAUGHT in Chicago (Bowen & Fenger). My father teaches at a charter high school now (NLCP). A fine isn't an effective means of getting parents involved. Encouraging parents to be more active with the PTA & mandating more parent-teacher conferences is the way to do that. The only thing the fines are going to do is create more debt among already poor parents.

@dkamouflage You're correct about everything you say. So what's the solution? Privatize them? I'm afraid that would wreck educational standards... at least for kids whose parents haven't got the money. The whole thing is a mess.
