This used to be a common way of thinking decades ago in the world. Problem is it's not compatible with Chinese values of showing off and their so called "face culture". They're cutting back because they have no choice, not because they want to.

@mah7961 no they don't. But the culture of showing off and gambling is so rampant it's inevitable. Chinese also attach your self worth to how much money you earn. That's why they are shameless in asking you your salary. Because they're trying to figure out how much respect you will be afforded. So putting out an image of "success" already guarantees you will be in the hole whether you actually succeed or not remains to be seen.

@Retdf-e8s Americans don't have a collective culture of showing off like the Chinese do. You won't really be shamed for not owning designer items or driving fancy cars in the US but your worth is attached to owning those things in China.
