  1. They've always been low class. They weren't that much different under the KMT and even in previous dynasties before that. Lying, cheating, and back stabbing were always the norm.

  3.  @arisaga822  The "high class" parts of China that are portrayed were always court culture. They show this in their historical dramas - even in Chinese court, there was always intrigue, backstabbing and deception. This is innate in Chinese culture. Trust was always in short order back then, it still is up to this day and it will never change no matter who is running the damned country.
