One reason is to have a ship which other navies might want to buy when Britain finishes with it. Hugely expensive submarine hunters have a more limited market.

@getstuffed2391 I'm not "expecting" it - there is a long history of this happening,. I used to walk past the Brazilian Naval Commission's office in Putney every day - Brazil has bought quite a few former RN ships. Lots of other countries have bought second hand RN ships too and refitted them. I think he market is more competitive now, however.

@getstuffed2391 You are talking about the Type-26 which has been designed to be muiltpurpose, if expensive, to be exportable. Australia has bought the design so it's not actually a market for our future second-hand type-26 ships - in fact we will have enabled a competitor when the time comes to sell them off. AFAICT Canada is the same.

@getstuffed2391 that's how rude people love to excuse themselves. It's pretty clear that you're not informed.

@zimtage1744 It's ok, they can go grab more when they want it from Russia.

@getstuffed2391 I'm Zimbabwean, not a "pom" and you're being rude. Money is the engine of war.

@verdebusterAP The high cost of Type-45s lead to attempts to save money by not testing the WR-21 engines properly. Cue massive problems and huge expense and ships sitting in docks. When you go for high specifications you tend to run out of money early and then you have a piece of crap that isn't fit for anything. I work with people every day that block progress because they want perfection that they cannot afford - it's a path to failure.

@verdebusterAP cost!

@verdebusterAP To me that seems ridiculous - money is the controlling factor in almost everything.
1
@verdebusterAP I think you should justify how people should build ships without money.

@sergarlantyrell7847 Apparently Argentina bought the type 42. If you want to sell older ships then they need to be designed to be multi-purpose where the UK has been used to designing submarine hunters for the North Sea. You probably also want to sell them a bit sooner. And, there is at least a chance that you could sell some new ships if your shipyards are open and have got the bugs out of their process by building ships for you. All of that is much harder with big, expensive, special purpose ships. I pretend to be an expert but I am not. I've just read enough to be dangerous, so add a pinch of salt :)

@sergarlantyrell7847 I'm familiar with the idea of buying high-end limited ships because I've dealt with that kind of choice often in different technical areas. Since ships are for the long term I think situations change and therefore flexibility wins in the long run. Plus I can see that stopping and starting the shipbuilding industry is incredibly expensive. Part of the job is to ensure that when needed, the country would be in a position to make better ships if it had to. To me that all points to a longer run of cheaper ships that are less exquisite.

The helicopter is one of the main weapons. The Wildcat, for example, can carry quite a large number of LWM Missiles which might be suitable against small attack craft.

@lennifrost2006 I'm a million miles from being an expert but it might be that the strategy is to keep problems as far away from the ship as possible. No more "crossing the T" and all that Hornblower stuff.
1
@lennifrost2006 possibly. One thing I think that landlubbers like me suffer from is a slightly odd perspective. e.g. I just realised that these ships aren't there so much to protect themselves as others and they have to be able to do it from a distance because they cannot be near all the shipping that might need protection.
1
@lennifrost2006 I assume so but I looked up the Wildcat helicoper's range - about 400 nautical miles? so lets say it could fly out 150nm spend a few minutes shooting things with missiles that have e.g. 10nm range and then fly back. I think that's still much more than the best extended range shells. So essentially if you're trying to defend a shipping lane, you can potentially do it with fewer ships. Anyhow this is all uninformed speculation on my part!
