That's the kind of excuse unreliable people almost always use to excuse their behavior. Doesn't matter to the commonwealth though - they have experienced the UK's absolute self centredness and aren't about to become 'vassals' again themselves because that really was what a colony was. Their actions will show the same cold self-interest that Britain showed to them.

The colonies had no choice over who they traded with for one thing - if that doesn't make them vassals what does? It ain't going to happen again.

Britons not "Britans"...surely?

I'm not sure you would really like the "equality" part.

I am a colonial Henrey, I don't need the pep talk. Nobody is grateful for being colonised, least of all the English (Romans), Welsh, Scots and Irish. Nobody colonises someone else for the other persons benefit either - payment for modernisation has been extracted in full.

A mention of Griffon Hoverwork would be decent - they are designing and making hovercraft you could actually ride on at least.

As one born in the commonwealth can I belittle that idea instead? The UK has been a totally unreliable ally first to the Commonwealth and now to the EU. Expect to have to offer up something special and have a serious prenuptial agreement if you want to get anyone to take a chance on the UK again.

Of course people look down on them and the first clue is in how you exclude e.g. South Africa and Rhodesia. Just try being a colonial in London - there are certainly people who look down on you all over the place and it's no surprise because British people look down on each other too based on accents etc.

Defense spending created the industry and when the war went away defense spending dropped. Airliners and military jets are somewhat a vanity industry anyhow - they get support either because their parent company gets massive defense contracts and turns the resultant knowledge to civilian use, as in the US, or by cheap loans as in the EU. Britain was really the demonstration that it wasn't very economic and couldn't survive without that support.
