There is value in formally educated programmers. Obviously I would say that, but working with people who haven't had training is very difficult sometimes because they're so stuck in their bad ways and have well developed excuses for the things that frequently go wrong for them. We are all like this and need to put effort into learning stuff that doesn't immediately seem relevant and giving it a chance to convince us - it doesn't stop after graduation.
