I don't think of anyone as "better" than me really but I understand when someone has a job to do that requires some respect. I wouldn't want to be rude to the King, for example, but I'm not kneeling in my mind. As for snobbishness, that is typically most intense amongst social climbers. People who feel "ontop" may not have flattering opinions of you but if they don't need to compete with you then you're not going to be under attack from them. So I don't think Americans or anyone else are free of snobbery - perhaps money matters to them a bit more than blood.
