  5. All of this stuff parallels what happened in Zimbabwe when I lived there: why can't we just train X? Well it takes N years to train X and we need some people who can do that now so that we can employ Y other people in our company who ARE local. At the base, it's really rather like centralised socialism because it's about trying to run the country according to the understanding level of the "average voter" who doesn't understand things outside their own profession very well.

  6.  @korolev-musictobashbrexitby  I wish it were as easy as that. I think it's really the parents. Bad leaders make it worse, obviously. i.e. if we don't teach people about acceptable behavior then they have kids and cannot teach them and so on. The problem is too big for one person to be responsible entirely. I don't want to be too mean - when both parents (or one) is struggling to pay the bills and keep a roof over there is less time to give kids what they need.

  7. FWIW I don't think that's a bazooka. It's probably something like an AT-4 rocket launcher and would be extremely relevant today. I don't care about Johnson ... in fact this whole thing of using the military for PR is sleazy IMO but it does seem to have worked out better for Starmer.

  8. I think you would say that corruption happens at a certain level in the UK rather than being universal - hence we have a chance because there is still a portion of the population who can feel outrage.

  9. If one needs nurses or drivers today, and it takes N years to train them then it doesn't help you to prevent the hiring of immigrants. today. It's stupid to squeeze the economy now just because you might be able to satisfy a need several years later. There's also no guarantee that you can convince people to study to do the jobs you think are needed and no way to ensure that they don't learn and then move elsewhere.

  11. The problem is that they're doing a very powerful thing: supporting other people's world view. I think most of us defend our view of the world very strongly as it's what makes us feel competent and confident. BJ has worked out, like many a demagogue before him, that some people very much want to believe certain things and he supplies them with the bullshit and projected confidence they need to be able to carry on.

  16. Unless they statistically sampled to get the audience, you cannot draw too many conclusions from the opinions of the audience. For one thing its people who want to be on TV and that can mean they're of a particular opinion.
