This is very helpful - especially the bit about getting as many resources as possible. I found this at university - it was the 10th book on partial differential equations that explained the application to a a sphere in a way that I could understand and up to that point I had felt hopeless. Everyone else in the class who passed must have found the prescribed textbook good enough but it didn't work for me.

I always found that the problem with people that were 'better than me' is that they didn't have problems with the stuff that confused me. So it was great that it was no problem for them but that simply made me feel more hopeless - that I was just not up to scratch. There's a meme about Einstein having problems with maths when he was young and I think that it's popular because of the way it gives people hope for themselves - even if it's not particularly true. The issue is how to deal with failure to understand and the way that feeling makes people want to never pick up a maths book again.

@James Herndon That's why I only got it on book 10 - it was the only one which wasn't a copy of all the others. I think life depends on whether a person with exactly your own mindset has trodden that path before and written down how they managed it.
