  7. Factually and sensitively done video, yet not over the top with sentimentality. (Not a slew of sob stories, just an honest look at reality) Perfect balance here Greg. Also, I loved the pacing of the video as well, slow enough without being boring. I assume that was your wife doing the interviews, she has such a pretty and calming voice, seemed like the people were opening up to her for that reason. It is heartening to see how empathetic you both are, I saw that in the "Ramen Guy" episode as well.

  8. Actually Shin didn't do that bad of a job, Dad should have told him to clean up the kitchen (or something) while he was waiting on the buns, he doesn't have that much patience yet. At least he wouldn't have left the kitchen and could keep an eye on them, Japanese seem too reliant on setting timers and technology in general. He would have smelled them burning. That was the lesson: don't get distracted.

  18. This would encourage people not to buy things with an EXCESS amount of packaging! That is a big problem here in the U.S. Manufacturers love to add extra to make the products look bigger. A lot of items can be bought with no packaging or you could just bring your own reusable bag.

  28. Honestly, I think Shin is aware that he "in an entertainment video", so he goes to his "entertainment mode". His idea of "video" and "entertainment" are those video games he plays and Japanese TV. He hops around and makes weird noises because that's exactly what they do. So he is basically putting on a show when he knows the camera is on him. Nothing wrong with him, he is just a little boy, who just doesn't get it, yet. He does interrupt his dad, which is just bad manners. The dad probably hates to cramp his style, since he believes the Japanese conform too much.

  29. Great video here with a beginning middle and end and of course interesting look BTS of a small restaurant in Japan. The filming and editing were your professional grade standards as well. I hear that people who buy electronics want a instruction manual on video instead of boring booklet, have you ever made a video for a product? I thought of you when I heard owners videos were getting more mainstream. Your wife was into the filming, direction, editing with this one right? So how did your wife like helping you make this video, since she was involved in all aspects and who watched the kids? Did Mrs. X become very interested and want to do more or did she say never ever again? Whatever, you have admit that the result was better than if you did it all alone. Like you said in a past video, you are lucky to have the type of work to actually have a huge family life. Sadly most people do not and this poor guy doesn't have much at all, it doesn't seem. Why do you think he has such a hard time finding part time workers? I would think that there would be some retired people to work here. (Like the movie "Sweet Bean") We loved this one Greg, thanks.

Hang out with John Daub and speak ONLY Japanese! Somebody like him understands why YOU don't understand. With native speakers, just spit it out! They can tell you are trying and even most of the time will help you. You seem too critical of yourself and afraid. Just jump in the sea of Japanese and know you are going to mess up more than you get it right. You will thrash around but they will never let you drown. Get over your fear and apprehensions and dive right in and your best is going to have to be good enough.

Still my point is that ALL parents should teach the kids (boys and girls) how to cook. If nothing else it teaches multi-tasking and paying attention...OR everybody has to literally EAT your mistakes. You can't really say that the stove burned my burgers, no, YOU burned the burgers! These are common sense life skills and I wish Greg would do another video.

  50. I know that planting a diversity of species is the biological way to go. Just two species is irresponsible. I am sure they know that now. One other reason is that if a natural plague kills off one species, the others will take over. In the 40's-50's every American street was planted with elms, it was beautiful and tempered the microclimates, then the 'dutch elm disease', now nothing.

  51. I've done that as well, and that's the point. When cooking you have to concentrate and multi-task. I don't even answer the phone, or tell them I will call back when I get to a stopping point. He did well for his age. We have appliances to make things easier, but not to do the thinking for us! That was not the mum, she is a serious cook, like the Ramen Man.

  56. For that reason I used to use them at this really good Chinese buffet,just to slow down, but you will be surprised how fast you will become an expert at Chetoos inhalation and chopsticks. Just keep the bottom one still, the top one does the work.

  59. Just wondering Greg if you use the tub soaking that often since you are Canadian and not used to doing it? I think that I would do the soak thing very rarely, just as a novelty since I am not used to it. I would just stick to doing the daily showers instead. The bath even seems like too much of a bother to me now.

  64. I made those Swedish meatballs from Food Wishes channel. Those have allspice and nutmeg in them and there is a little cream in the brown sauce. I even got the Loganberry jam (didn't know what it was). Chef John also just baked them in a very hot oven, which makes it easier. Wow are those things GOOOOOD!

  102. I usually give fruit rather than flowers, my mother always though flowers were a complete waste of money, and in a large sense I agree. But that fruit has to be good, not these expensive mail order fruit baskets online everywhere. If I get peaches or a watermelon that is particularly good then I will get extra as gifts for somebody who is going through a hard time. Not packaged like the Japanese, however. The recipient doesn't think it is weird at all. I am in the US. Flowers are more for weddings and funerals. IMHO

  103. It doesn't make sense that they use all that extra, excess packaging, then you have to wash the trash and sort it, give it a kiss, and put it out on a certain day. I like the "no-frills" approach. I would think that the Japanese public would just ask for much less envelopes and packets, or the bare minimum amount of wrapping. Less, to deal with. I save jars, like mayo jars, for left over paint, or just leftovers and they make a nice drinking glass (if you forget it somewhere, oh well).

I am surprised that they are not more on top of this and have not already found a solution to this, are you sure they have not? If you look at climate research by Dr. Tim Ball, and others, there isn't nearly enough CO2 on the planet now. I am confused: I followed you about thinning these artificial 'forests' since the understory is so important, to planting MORE trees. I didn't get the jump there. Also, did you look into what they are doing with all that overabundance of venison? Deer thrive, but their natural preditors are also dangerous to man.

  129. I saw the video about grocery shopping. I am surprised that it really looked like an American store almost exactly and it runs the same way too, I didn't think it would. The hard part would be to determine what to buy (if you can tell what it is) and deciding if what you are buying is worth the money. No way could you let the kids help you decide what to buy, that just would not work.

Yep and I noticed all the packaged fish too, that would be very complicated for me.  I don't think that I would buy fish there, but rather a market, if they have them there.  I buy produce for the most part at a market since it is better and the are also better.   137. Let me tell you a much easier way to do the translations. Put it into the setting of "auto-translate" to the language that you are translation into. You will see that there are errors and much of it does not make sense so you just make the corrections there. This saves allot of work with the timing of captions, and half of it is already typed in.

  148. Greg isn't the country housing like a tenth of what it is in Tokyo? BUT, of course you have to buy a car and maintain it. Seems like you could do your work in the country, but could your wife? Do you think your kids would get that bad of an education in the country, I mean, how bad is it? Seems like you would be more suited to having a little space a slower pace being from Vancouver.   149. The only thing really that really changed here in FL was no TP. Now today, they are making us wear masks, 6/26/20. So self-isolation to mass riots without masks, now back to covid. Since there are so many conflicting stories of this covid, most people really didn't take it too seriously, although some few were really scared.

Very traditional with a center garden, I wondered then why you didn't do this back then, because they were probably not expensive and not as congested as where you were living. I wonder how these places sell so fast. I figured your wife had to stay where you were due to work. No offense, but the city houses seem to lack any character. Wow the very first one was so nice. Or fight racism with reverse racism, etc. That does not work as I am sure you know that. I mention this only as a possible resolution, but don't really know. However, it is worth a try, don't you think? If you contend that it would be too expensive, then look at the price to keep each prisoner in jail per day. I would be interested if you have any ideas, because what we (our society) are doing now is obviously not helping. I see things are getting even worse with antifa and blm today. Most people learn or change their minds by example.

  156. Beautifully done film. BTW, the closed captioning, at least in Spanish and English seems to work pretty well. On that subject I have to say that when you flash various text or a graph on the screen it usually too brief and too hard for me to read. Thanks for 30 Kilometers = 20 MPH. We Americans don't know what Kilometers are! We say "American" not so much out of exceptionalism, but because our country doesn't have a name. "Citizen of the United States" is too much trouble to say.
