Why the 1970s heavy rail transit boom? Every transit maven/pundit/advocate/fan knows this one, especially if they lived in one of these cities and saw the festive red, white, and blue "funding provided by the UMTA" signs festooned about their local metro construction sites. Here you go: "The Urban Mass Transportation Act of 1964 (Pub.L. 88–365, USC Title 49, Chapter 53) provided $375 million for large-scale urban public or private rail projects in the form of matching funds to cities and states. The Urban Mass Transportation Administration (now the Federal Transit Administration) was created." -- from Wikipedia. Bear in mind that, in the early 60s, $375 mil went a LOT farther than it does today. You're welcome!
