  1. Yes we can but SHOULD we? Probably not entirely. Arcosanti is a prototype compact city in Arizona that was designed from the start to be carless. There's a small parking lot in front of the Visitor's Center but no internal streets, just walkways. There are apartments scattered throughout the compact city. The first time I visited I wondered how one moved in to an apartment there. They told me that the truck gets as close as possible on the access road and everything is manually moved around on dollies and carts. That includes heavy kitchen appliances, HVAC hardware, furniture, etc. While I dislike quoting characters from comic book movies, I have to say "not a great plan!" Later I sketched out a "new & improved" version of the design using "skinny streets" and other New Urban precepts overlaid on the same compact footprint while retaining the integrated greenhouses and other agricultural elements in order to create a place where people could actually LIVE and do their people things.
