@JeanPiFresita The bad guys hacked DULLES' comms. All those planes could have simply called up Washington Center (ARTCC) or another nearby Center and been re-routed by those controllers. Also, the GPWS aboard the aircraft would have alerted VERY noisily ("whoop whoop pull up whoop whoop pull up" or a similar warning) when they got too close to the ground on approach no matter what the damned ILS indicated. Also, also, planes can land on snow. It's risky, but not as risky as running out of fuel over the most populous region on the continent. Also, also, also, there HAD to be a few airports within a 45-minute flight of IAD that could clear a runway.
