  1. It sounds like the author of the book series was HEAVILY influenced by Larry Niven's "Known Space" universe. Lots of Belt v. Earth politics in some of his older stories. Chase scenes that take weeks, months, or even years to play out. Counterintuitively, Niven makes that sort of thing interesting. I highly recommend his works, including his collabs with Pournelle.
