Sort of. Out of more than 70,000 employees, only 2,500 are armed Special Agents. Everyone else is "armed" with pencils and calculators.

@georgewilliamssr5230 With all due respect, sir, that is NOT how that works. Interagency cooperation is a complex beast at best and every agency involved has a vested interest in protecting its own bowl of rice. The IRS cannot just show up and start bossing around your local cops. You're criticizing a power they don't actually possess.

@georgewilliamssr5230 Then you must also be aware of the reams of paperwork required in each and every individual case where local assistance is requested by CID and the fact that such assistance is not always a given but is contingent on available personnel and other resources. Your instructor seriously exaggerated the power of the IRS. You don't really believe that EVERYTHING the Academy told you was the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, do you? In 2002 through 2004 a number of cops told me with a straight face that the Patriot Act restricted public photography of buildings. It did NO such thing! The ONLY mention of photography in the USAPATRIOT legislation was providing funding for public surveillance cameras -- exactly the opposite of what those cops said!

@georgewilliamssr5230 It's actually a 90% conviction rate. Still impressive, no doubt, but NOBODY has a 100% rate of ANYTHING.

The RRB is the equivalent to the Social Security Administration for railroad employees. I'm not sure how many armed officers administering pensions might require. The IRS, on the other hand, DOES have a Criminal Investigation Division that employs 3,300 to 3,500 people, about 2,500 of whom are armed Special Agents. Revenue Agents (Examination) and Revenue Officers (Collections) are NOT armed. They are, however, sometimes threatened with bodily harm. When that happens, a CID agent or two might show up to ask a few questions.
