Thank you for the explainer. I had no idea that this had happened. That being said, as there are SIX maglev systems in commercial service (some of which are considered obsolete) and the Japanese are testing an even more advanced version (that I call the "Platypus" for the obvious reason), can we please just STOP calling them "futuristic?"

@matsv201 Personally, I don't. The truly obsolete short-distance people movers that employed maglev tech are gone, now. If I did, though, I'd consider the two low-speed maglevs in China to be "obsolete via technological overkill and resultant excessive maintenance burden." You don't need a maglev to achieve 62 mph. Conventional rail does that every day.
