I have a highly automated suburban home with smart switches, smart thermostat, dumb but efficient appliances (my fridge doesn't need its own Instagram account, thank you), solar panels, battery banks, rainwater collection, and FULL control over the whole shebang. It's a utility-interactive system but I did NOT sign up for the city utility's "Smart HVAC" program because f*ck those idiotic commie bastards, that's why.
